Im shortly going to be starting a new build, based on the E8400 Wolfdale and am totally confused as to what O/S to go for... im currently using XP Pro and have a beta copy of windows 7 but am wondering about Vista and if so which version?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Excellent, will definatley load windows 7 onto my new build when i get started hopefully the end of next week.

Vista really did flop didnt it?

Vista is under-rated, but yeah it's tripped itself up on a few things. Oddly I run Server 2008 as my home PC (MSDN legit version) and it's better than Vista for gaming on my rig :-/

The thing with Vista is that it did have a bad launch. It wasn't released in a state that was ready to be used. It was still 'in development' in my eyes.

From the limited testing I've had with Windows 7, 7 is what Vista should have been. It feels a lot more polished and 'just works'.

Since SP1, I've had zero issues with Vista - they have done something right and love Vista, would have it over XP any day.

What He said!!

Is it time to take the 64bit versions of XP / Vista or are there still too many driver issues out there to make it worth leaving 32bit? Do gamers noticeably benefit from a 64bit rig or are the changes negligible?

Good lord. People recommending W7 Beta for someones main PC

Vista is your only *real* choice on a system like that. XP just won't take advantage. Vista will. Don't listen to the naysayers, it's a great OS and practically the same as W7.

Have to say Vista x64 in my opinion.

It's a very solid O/S and has been since launch on my PC. I've had it running over a year with no slow-downs and no problems (other than the ones I made for myself by trying to run incompatible software).

Windows 7 does have it's issues in my opinion (I mean no classic menu for a start is annoying as hell) and is still in beta meaning that there won't be massive support from all hardware vendors yet meaning limited support.

If you do want to go to Windows 7 then there will be an upgrade path no doubt.
