Which operating system is best?

I’ve had Vista x64 running since August 08 its rock solid no problem with driver’s, updates, software, etc. If Vista was no good why is windows 7 based on it, lol went on my old PC which has XP Pro on had not been on for a few month and Vista beat’s it all the way. My other son his PC has the original 1st install of Vista about 14 months old all he has done is defragged it ( JKDefrag )weekly deleted the rubbish off( CCleaner ) and it’s still as fast, smooth, etc as the day we put it on. Where as I used to do a clean install of XP Pro about every 6 month’s to keep it fresh, all 3 PC,s in are house get well used surfing, gaming, etc. I’ll wait and see what Win 7 is about when they release it and been out a few month and read what people have to say about it on this forum before I make my mind up about it.
For me NW SKINHEAD should go with Vista x64 as his OS.

Vista, unless you're prepared to use a beta OS as your main OS. I am dual booting W7 and Vista on my laptop, but W7 isn't going near my main PC until at least RC1, and even then it'll be a dual boot. Unlike XP > Vista, I don't see a reason to rush to W7 over Vista - there aren't any massive improvements in my experience.

Hmmm im torn to be honest I mean do I really want to spend over £100 for an O/S when if im informed correctly its replacement is only a few months off? Vista has had so much bad press that im probably over thinking things...

I'm using Vista x86, and Vista x64 plus Win 7 Beta(tried 7000 ,7068 build and using 7077 build at the moment),personally I won't be buying Win7 retail version ,basically nothing there that I need upgrade wise(so going to wait for Win8),and going from rock stable Vista to Win7 is not a upgrade in my books(especially if you don't see anything in Win7 you need).

Vista SP2 is due very soon as well ,however if I was on XP(and looking to upgrade etc) I would either go for Vista right now or wait for retail version of Win7,I would not put a beta OS on any main system no matter how good it is.

Does anyone know exactly when the retail version of Win 7 is to be released? As if its closer to a year I dont mind forking out for Vista ultimate... if its inside of 6 months i'll hold off for Win 7

The thing with Vista is that it did have a bad launch. It wasn't released in a state that was ready to be used. It was still 'in development' in my eyes.

From the limited testing I've had with Windows 7, 7 is what Vista should have been. It feels a lot more polished and 'just works'.

Since SP1, I've had zero issues with Vista - they have done something right and love Vista, would have it over XP any day.

I disagree, the vast majority of problems encountered when Vista was first launched were not related to vista, but to third party programs and drivers, which did not improve until people started demanding vista compatibility. This was despite vista not actually changing any of the NT/XP programming guidelines, just actually enforcing them better.

Windows 7 just works because it's basically a shiny vista and third parties have sorted out their vista compatibility

In my opinion vista has been by far the better operating system that microsoft have released...i am currently running the 64bit Ultimate edition and touch wood i havnt encountered any problems with this as yet and have been running this os for probably about close just over a year now... wouldn't choose any other operating system that is out at the minute...but will be trying the WINDOWS 7 when its released, have got the BETA but going to wiat for the full version.

Not really, no. It's just not worth buying any OS when the next one is months away.

Of course it is, I know I say it in every post on the subject. but you can get vista HP retail for 1/2 the oem cost and then buy the Windows 7 upgrade and it should work out cheaper than just buying windows7 whilst getting the functionality of a stable Operating system in the mean time.

Punkbuster does not work on Windows7 so that rules out COD series and it's not 100% stable.

All really good advice, I think im gonna try windows 7 for a little while and see what its like, If its no good i'll crack on with Vista HP and do the upgrade. when the RC gets sorted out....

It also sold more copies than any other operating system ever made.

Yes that may be however id argue that was more of a case of good marketing strategy's than having an excellent product.... I can think of a few other things that have done well simply because of hype rather than substance Star Wars episodes 1,2 and 3 for example!

+ the fact there are so many more computers now as compared to when xp was released

i dont think changing the price of xp from £50 to over £100 did vista any harm either

Vista is an excellent product though. That's the point we are making.

It's marketing was a complete disaster though and that is the sole reason why it has a "bad name".

Vista is a text book case of "excellent product, crap marketing".

To be fair ive only had limited experience with Vista HP on a laptop about a year ago and that had some rather annoying driver issues with the built in web-cam etc. which was solved as soon as i installed XP Pro instead
