I want to build my next PC in 4 months time, which includes the P4 920 (2800 MHz, dual-core, 2MB per core).

I remember that the original hyper-threading CPUs were optimised for Windows XP. Win 2000 and below was restricted to single-threading. I would like to carry on using Windows 2000. Will it see two cores on a CPU and utilise it?

Thanks.

im 99.9% sure windows 2000 does not support dualcore

only the server editions:

Dual-core support requires the following OSes:
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server (will recognize each core as a processor)
Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server (will recognize each core as a processor)
Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, Standard Edition (will recognize each processor socket as a processor)
Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, Enterprise Edition (will recognize each processor socket as a processor)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 5
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 with web maintenance update applied

Out of curiosity... why do you want to stick to windows 2k ? it is now more than 5 years old, and i believe micro$oft has either stopped, or very soon to be stopping any support for this OS

I used to run W2K with a P4 3.2Ghz with Hyperthreading and it picked that up as 2 x CPUs so could potentially work.

MS & Intel both said it would not properly work with HT or find them but I had no issues with the 2 x Virtual CPUs and used to do all my 3D gfx rendering with it.

The trick seems to be when you install W2K ensure you manually select the HAL & MultiCPU PC on install @ the press F6 for drivers stage otherwise it may not work.

XP is better though as it is @ least 10-15% faster overall then W2K and as others have said official W2K support is almost finished.
