okay not the usual request.... but my father just had his HDD die (after 15 years) and he got a new one, (80gb) and we are wondering what OS we can put onto it, it is an AMD k6 (457mhz) (we think) and the gfx is called a "3D blaster banshee CT 6760" we are clueless to what it could use

it was previously using windows 95, safe bet is to try pickup a windows 95 disc, or any other alternatives?

primary use is hardcore gaming at 1080p

just kidding, its a jukebox hooked up to a usb1.1 vynel player/recorder and a stereo

Windows 98SE or possibly windows 2000sp4 ignore windows ME, used to be a good CPU, creative graphics card not so hot.

The real question is memory? How much ram does the system have? 32MB then Win98SE. 64MB or more then 2000sp4. 256MB or more and it will run XP quite useably.

Just had another thought. With 256MB and a decent swap partition I'd probably run Linux Mint 7 on kit like that myself.

You could download and try a Linux live disk. there are many free programs for what he is using it for.

andy.

I presume you mean 512MB of ram. If so then XP would run fine. But I would certainly suggest Linux Mint, especially version 7 because it is in my experience lighter on old kit than 8 or 9.

Grab the Mint7 live disc and give it a whirl, remembering of course that it would be much faster when fully installed.

Mint is very user friendly so it won't be too much of a problem getting used to.

Cheers,
