Which PC magazine?

When I'm travelling I usually buy a few PC magazines to while away the hours.

I've always liked PCAdvisor and still do but I bought a copy of PCPlus the other week and thought it was an excellent read. The reviews and news stories were informative and interesting and there were plenty of them. My train journey seemed to be over in no time I was so engrossed.

Also, the DVD had lots of useful apps on it.

Custom PC has always had my vote. Excellently written articles which are both informative and a joy to read. There's only a disc one every 6 months to update their benchmarking software and with a few free decent applications on.

Give it a try.
ditto

I used to subscribe to several but have now got rid of most of them as by the time they come out all the stuff in them are out of date and a lot of them have similar content.
I used to get:-
PC Pro More poxy adverts than editorial
Computer Buyer Ditto plus getting really thin.
Computer Shopper Ditto
PC Advisor
ComputerActive Went downhill rapidly.
Custom PC
PC Format
Micro Mart.

Now i just get:-
Custom PC
PC Format
Micro Mart
PC Advisor

Out of all of them it's a toss up between Custom PC and Micro Mart.

I used to read a lot of computer magazines, the main ones being:
PC Plus(good read although a lot of it veers towards businesses)
PC Zone(interesting for gaming reviews but basically because I liked the writing style at the time)
PC Pro(my uncle still gives me a copy when he has done reading it, not too badly written but a lot of adverts and not always relevant)
PC Format(is/was expensive at the time but occasionally interesting)
Computer Shopper(think of it as a catalogue of adverts and you won't be too far off the mark but could be good when upgrading)

There were a few others that I'd buy on an occasional basis but now I don't buy any unless I'm going to be travelling somewhere for a few hours and even then I'd prefer a good book or even to catch up with a mountain biking magazine. PC magazines just seem to have lost a lot of their relevance but that could just be me. :)

Custom PC is good, but only for the more unusual stuff they publish - like the articles on building your own laptop, and some of the mod logs.

Browsing the hardware forums is a much much better way of guaging the current best hardware.

Used to read PCW, but by the time it arrived it was out of date. I'd read the news stories and realise I'd read them all weeks earlier on various websites.

Decided it was a waste of cash.

I dont read PC magazines no more, the internet is more up to date anyway.

The magazines are printed and written quite a bit in advance. So things change and more importantly a lot of reviews done in magazines are sometimes biased towards manafacturers that pay to advertise within there magazine, now the magazine is not going to write something bad about a company that pays them a lot of money each month for advertising is it ?

Thats my believe in it anyhow and have read similar points on the net.

The net I find is a lot better, impartial reviews and what not.

Although magazines have there place on holiday etc
