Which program do you use for defrag?

PerfectDisk. I've used Diskeeper but even though it's faster I think PerfectDisk does a better job.

If you can look beyond the website which seems well dodgy, then I urge you to try Ultimate Defrag. It allows you to specify which files go where and gives you a nice visual "metaphor" of your drives as it defrags. Seriously, give it a try.

Was previously an O&O user. Have switched to Diskeeper 2007.

With O&O I had to consciously decide when to defrag - and then leave my machine to go about its business for a good few hours (lots of large hard drives).

Perhaps I should have defragged before I un-installed O&O prior to installing Diskeeper 2007 as my machine has been very busy the past few days going about its business. One thing I can say, is that I haven't noticed any impact at all. Except when I leave my machine for a while and I can hear activity on one of my drives. Or when its working on a drive whilst I am reading a web page.

I find PerfectDisk to be the best of the lot. Its the only defrag prog that tries to get maximum free space buy putting all the defragged files together in a block from the start of the partition as well as make sure all the boot files are at the start. All others seem to just make sure files are whole , but free space is then all over the place which to me is still fragmentation.

I've got windows defrag set up as a daily scheduled task, seems ok if you let it run often, otherwise you'll get in a mess.

what exactly is wrong with windows own? it does what its supposed to do, doesnt it?

it takes to long and does a pretty naf job and tends to ignore a lot of files. youll notice it say defrag done, tidies up a lot towards the start of the partitition and leave a mess towards the end. and thats only when its performing at its best. probably hasnt been updated since it was included in win95 :D

on my main pc i use o&o defrag

on my really stripped down pc, no defrag i've tried will install properly (really went over the top with the removals) so i use power defragmentor its a commandline based defrag, but power defrag adds a basic gui to it

http://www.excessive-software.eu.tt/ (naff website i know) for power defrag
and you need contig.exe (made by sisinternals) in your system32 folder http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/FileAndDisk/Contig.mspx

works really well actually and total size is about 600kb

remember the old 9x/me defrag.. "windows has detected that you are breathing.. restarting defrag"

i can actually notice the reponsivness after a defrag with pd, ive tried many others and the effect just isnt the same.
