Which quad core?

It is a great cpu but quads are better at certain things. Plus I have owned a 6600 in the past, and that felt 'smoother' than this. It's difficult to explain.
 
Well you cant go wrong with a Q6600 clocked at 3ghz+. The Q9450 looks nice also. It all depends what your budget is. I would personally recommend the Q6600 even though you have owned it before. Great performance for the price although you may want to look at the Q9450 or even the 9550?

PS i am assuming because you are only upgrading your processor that you are not considering I7

Well the q6600 price is going up, as the production goes down. If you want what is probably the best quad in 775 it's the 9550, bangs/bucks wise. With the E0 stepping it will run fairly easily at 4ghz.
 
a used Q6600 (preferably an older chip with a lower vid) which is a guaranteed clocker.
