or the netgear dg834gt

which will give the better range and wireless speed.

cheers

(i did look on google before im flamed. i can find which is better, im feeling netgear but not sure)

ok,this was my thinking too. what does the DGTeam firmware do?

A few things, but mostly it's just "better". It has updated ADSL drivers, busybox, NAT loopback and stuff you probably don't even need to know about. Plus it's extremely configurable compared to the default Netgear firmware - allowing you to do things like tweak your connection SNR and finely tune your firewall settings etc.

You can find out a lot more, as well as download it for yourself, here. :)

They are both good routers.
They can both be used with the DMT tool to manually adjust your SNR.
But from experince , the Netgear has better Wifi is is easier to configure .
Download and install the DGteam firmware , and providing you update using an ethernet cable and you dont have a powercut , there should be no worries about bricking it.
(dont update the firmware over Wifi).

Ok cheers, is there any way i can brick it or crash it permently?

As chuffnut said, provided you don't cut the power half way through and use an ethernet cable you'll be OK. If the worst happens, Netgear offer a recovery utility anyway (which works under XP). I've flashed GTs hundreds of times and never had an issue. :)

Ok thanks. Yer its via a cable. The reason im willing even to try any router other then i have is because im on my ipod touch directly above above the front room upstairs and im getting two bars. Even 2 bars sitting downstairs sometimes like 3-4 meters away. I think the router is a bad one or the wifi ariel inside is buggered either way the wifi performance is poor

It could just be your house or local conditions mate. I get a full signal anywhere in our place, or the garden, and we don't exactly live in a small house! My mum, on the other hand, lives in a shoebox bless her; and she can't get wifi more than six or eight feet from the router. Mobiles don't even work in her house. *shrug*

Wireless N should help, if all else fails. Good luck with the GT, they're decent little units.

nether. i hate both. allthough if i was to pick it would o/b be netgear. Im a Cisco/Linksys fan :D

^ im getting round to getting a linksys wrt unit,

the one i have is a Netgear DG934G

every were ive read about wireless range its all ways put down on the wireless performance. i mean im not asking it much and it cant even give me full signal up stairs directly above the unit.

theres no power lines or motorways i live in a semi rural place with the odd passing cass id say about 5-10 a minute in the morning and evening and the rest like 3-4 a minute, so not busy. my middle wall is plaster with the stairs running though. and the walls arent incredibly thick i would say of a normal thickness for a normal 1940's/50's house

see i get full signal every were in the front room or 2 bars and 2 dropping to 1 in some places in the kitchen and 1 bar 20foot to the garden, were it says table and beyond that i get nothing but 2 bars 10 feet upstairs!!!. its not beside any electical units, telephones etc.

This is by far the worst netgear router I have been in contact with, the wireless on this unit is shocking

lol i thought so,

oh with this dgt firmware is it best to update the router via the web panal? as the instructions say via recover unitlity for win xp 32 users, so im guess it wont work that way on the win 7 64bit?

I had trouble using the recovery utility on Windows 7 and even on my Windows Server 2003 machine at home.

I had no problems updating the fireware by using the WebUI which iv been doing for years.

The WebUI can be used for updating the firmware, this is the method I use.

With regards to the ports, the DSL Port will be used to connect the router to the phone line, the LAN ports are used to connect your PC's/Laptop's/Xbox360s or what ever networking device you have to the router VIA an Ethernet cable, it doesnt matter which port you use, they all do the same. You can also enable the wireless on the router for the devices with wireless capabilities, make sure you secure the wireless network though,

yer, right, little problem, updated the router, and it didnt work before update but it shows no internet. is there any drivers needed?

No drivers needed, are you sure you used the correct firmware version? is the routers sync light on and syncing with your local BT exchange? usually if the sync light is on, and the internet light off, this means its sync'd but has not authenticated with your ISP's RADIUS server so check your ADSL username/password and other settings on the router including making sure your in NAT mode if you have a router only.
