My Mrs would like a cheap runaround to get her to and from work occasionally and see her friends. She has only been driving a year or two and has an EU driving license so therefore insurance cost is the biggest factor.

For this kind of budget I have suggested a Micra- can get a 60k 2001 kind of car in budget which is within insurance budget. Also suggested a 1.1 206 from same era. Unfortunately a Jazz is outside of this budget.

What would you suggest?

5 door
Small
Manual
Up to 1.3l
Not a yaris (insurance cost!)

Fiesta petrol. I had a 1.4 zetec and it was actually an excellent car. 4 doors with aircon and 15" alloy wheels. Supremely reliable and hilariously cheap to run. Good fun to drive too.

By the way I sold it with 60k on the clock for a grand two years ago!

Yaris insurance cost? Statistically the Yaris is the cheapest modern car you can insure...?

So my choice would be between:
Yaris
Fiesta
Focus

1.3 petrol Toyota Starlet from '95-'98 ish. Quite frugal, cheap as chips to insure, absolutely bombproof. You would have to do something seriously wrong to break that engine. The CD trim level has a lot of amenities IIRC, and pretty sure it came in 5 door.

Just don't go for an imported turbo Starlet, as it's none of the above :p

The Toyota Yaris is also an excellent buy, and to be honest, you may well be better going for one of those over a Starlet. It'll be much safer for one, and I can imagine insurance to be virtually the same. Not sure why you've had to rule it out as, like Rybo mentioned, they're supposed to be well cheap.

Yes its the Aygo which is identical to the C1 and 107, the Yaris however is very close in terms of insurance group.

yaris 1.0 - Group 5
Yaris 1.3 - Group 7
Aygo 1.0 - Group 3
