Hi all,

I'm after a new sat nav unit:

  • Max £150
  • European maps would be nice
  • Lifetime map updates
  • Live traffic information if possible

I can't think of any other requirements tbh I'm sure that'd cover it.

I've got the Garmin 2595LMT which has now been replaced by the 2597LMT, very nice unit has Lifetime Maps (I believe they are Nokia Here Maps) and a TMC traffic receiver.

The unit and guidance are very good, the maps are quite accurate and updated every 4 to 6 months, There is a little bit of customisation with Vehicles, Dashboards and Voices (there's even a record your own program available!).

The TMC can (in some areas) be a bit flakey, as it's on the Classic FM bandwidth, which (for instance in Slough) is crowded by a lot of Pirate/Asian stations so from J8/9 to J4 on the M4 it's coverage can be hampered!

2597LMT - £130 notes!

But you can also (if you can stretch your budget an extra £10enner) get the 2598LMT-D which has DAB-TMC rather than Analogue from the 2595/97's, so it doesn't suffer from the same interference problems! from what I've heard!

2598LMT-D - £161

**edit**

Just noticed the 2599LMT-D is out now at £150 so bang on your budget!!

Can I ask, what is the reasoning for getting anything other than Google Maps on an android device?

The maps are the most accurate, it shows traffic data better than anything ever before, it dynamically re-reoutes based on traffic information (as well as roadworks etc), sounds better than any sat-nav I've heard as well as having a device that can be used for other things.

All I can see for dedicated units is perhaps a slightly better battery life?

Better Battery, No need for a Data connection - What happens when you get a Crap Data Connection etc.. in Google Maps??? Voice Control, Bluetooth Handsfree Calling...

You can cache Google Maps on to a device these days, no need for a constant data connection other than for live traffic etc. Voice control possible with android. As is handsfree calling, as it is a phone...

Perhaps just battery life then?

I'd just get TomTom or Navigon on your phone. Both are good and with a decent Brodit dock and power lead, battery life isn't an issue.

In which case buy an App that downloads the maps to your Smartphone. I've been using CoPilot for years on iOS. Cost me £15, not £150.

Reminds me, need to check if Brodit have one out for the iPhone 6 yet...

No idea why you seem so bothered about 'data connection', if I need to use a portable nav device I use an old HTC Sensation in Airplane Mode - good battery life, zero data connection required, large choice of software.

Cheers for all the advice.

I emailed Brodit yesterday in regards to one of their mounts, as I want to make sure it'll fit in my car.
If they come back with a yes then I'll probably just buy the mount, and use that.

Slightly OT but I've recently stated using Waze as a sat nav, I find it pretty excellent all round. The communication with other Waze users seems to be on point when giving up to date traffic and re-routing for the fastest journey.

Been using the TomTom app for my iphone - costs about £30 I think. Works really well, I would say slightly better than google maps app and easier to use. I have the aux cable plugged into the car and connected to the phone so it plays the navigation instructions through the speakers and lowers the volume of the music while it tells where to go.

Also noticed it has lane guidance when coming off junctions.

Navigon is my main and pretty much only "nav" app.

3GB in total (offline).

Never used it in Europe until Sunday when i drove my brothers car back from northern Denmark to Calais ~750 miles, always use it over here.

Mind you the estimate eta are a little optimistic, it said 10.5 hours, i did it in 12 with an half an hour stop..

Yup nav free here as well tried various navs for work and it's far better than anything tomtom or garmin offer

Used Nokia Here on the way into the dealership today, outstanding app, great directions, great quality of voice and some nice added features.
