I want to build a silent 580 based gaming rig. Case will be a silverstone FT02. Now which 580 should I go for? I'm thinking of the Asus Direct II CU but will this card be ok with that case because it doesn't exhaust air outwards? I read on a review that you have to be careful what cooler your gfx card has with that case.

If you want it silent. Watercooling springs to mind of course. Do you just not want to go down that route?

Not really. Can put a pc together but never done water cooling before plus is it financialy viable to add watercooling to a 580 system? How much am I looking at to watercool a 580 + CPU to get silence? And will it be that much more quiet than high quality air cooling like a noctua cpu cooler?

£250 ish, plenty of thread recently asking similar questions, have a read around.

£350ish if you want to do it properly ;)
Here's my basket - i'm doing the same thing:

You can just take out the stuff you don't need ad add things you do. I already have a fan controller and fluid. You can get rid of the lighting and one of the rads

So that's
£450
-£70 for a rad
-30 for a cheaper pump
-30 for a cheaper res
-20 for all the lighting crap I put in
+40 for fan controller and fluid

That's around £350 total

all of that just for a cpu and single graphics card? what case do you have? couldnt you make do with a single 360 rad?

ok thanks but will that £250 make it much quiter than good air cooling?

As I said, £350 would be a better budget

Yah! I want the option to expand if needed any time.
I have the TJ07

EDIT: see my edit above. I could have gone for a 360 but I might aswell overdo it as I want to be ready if i suddenly want 2x 6990's and a 590 for physx along with two xeons!!!

Why wouldn't it be financially viable. If the time comes you replace or swap your GPU. You just swap the waterblock or sell it along with it and replace the block with the one you need. Everything else stays, pump, rad, tubing, liquid etc.

Of course it would be quieter than air cooling. There's no air :p

Have you heard the fans on a GTX 580? They're not exactly quiet. Replace it with a waterblock and you can overclock the card and not hear a thing except your pump and other fans.

If Silence is the goal. There really is no other way to go than watercooling. I personally don't care to much about the noise of fans, I just crank up the speakers and all is good.

Just seems like a huge amount of money to make it super quiet, try running the GPU as it is and the CPU with one of the good air coolers and see how loud it really is.

Yeah that's why I was thinking of an Asus Direct II CU. It's got some really good reviews and is suppose to be extremely quiet. I don't mind spending an extra £40 or so for the card if it's quieter. But like my original question I want to know if it will run ok in the FT02. It's no good buying a quieter card if the thermodynamics in the case mean it'll raise the temps of my system and make the fans work harder thereby beating the whole point of spending extra for a silent card.

For CPU cooling i'm thinking of a noctua dh-14.

Regarding water cooling I may look into it someday but my main priority for the new build is quick and easy setup out of the box.

It doesn't matter if you use an internal exhaust card with the FT02 and it's not great for watercooling, i used to run 460 sli in mine ok.

I would go for KFA2 anarchy edition with the arctic cooler fitted although it is triple slot.

Yet there are always fans blowing air through radiators and of course pumps to consider. So air is still a factor, unless you make a passive array like Monkey Puzzle has with his Project Hush.

An aftermarket cooler, or factory fitted custom cooler, provided it's big and efficient enough makes such a difference to a graphics card's noise output.

Some coolers will be only slightly better than stock cooling though and some people's idea of silence may not fit with yours.

I think the Phantom uses a retarded fan position for aesthetics rather than heat tranferrance so wouldn't go there for silence.

Something with 3x 92mm fans, triple slot design would be my recommendation. Is there a GTX580 with a factory fitted Arctic Accelero Extreme Plus? Or maybe fit an aftermarket cooler to a stock 580. The best aftermarket air cooler for any graphics card at the moment is the Thermalright Shaman but it's 4 slots so non SLI really.

Edit: Weren't there some threads about the KFA2 saying that it shipped with a high idle fan speed? I know one guy on here had to flash the BIOS to enable a lower idle speed but that may have been a GTX480 model, I just can't remember.

I've got the Noctua NH-U12P in my FT02 along with the Asus GTX580 Direct II CU and it's very quiet even at load.

I've done watercooling in the past myself, I spent hundreds of pounds on it but in the end I went back to high end air cooling as IMO it's just as quiet as even water cooling needs fans to cool the rads so there's really not much in it.
