Hi all,

I have been running my winnie 3000+ @ 2.4 with a DFI Expert perfect for over a year now. However, I have not upgraded anyhing for awhile and would like to update the cpu, but I am really confused which path to take. I definately want to stick to sk939 though.

Is ther opteron likely to the best choice? They do come in dual core flavors too right?

Also, at them moment I use my PC for games, pic editing and dvd watching. TBH the system wors perfectly but I want to upgrade something :) Am i likely to see a speed increase though?

Dont want to miss out on the last lot of sk.939 chips :)

Thanks

Opteron 165 and 170s are cheap these days and have been clocking pretty well. Also 4400x2's....

At 2.4ghz the dual core will perform nearly the same as the winnie unless the application is multithreaded.

However it's more likely you'll be able to get it to at least 2.7-2.8.

Also, if you want a real upgrade then I suggest switching to the Core 2 Duo....or changing your graphics card as that does most of the work in gaming.

mind you i have not noticed any speed increase going dual core with the games i play.

test drive unlimited, GRAW, Just Cause, Age of empires 3 and stalker are the same as single core performance.

probably just the games i play i guess.

True, seeing as I want to stick with my x1900/2gb DDR kit for a while yet a dual core makes sense imo - specially seeing as more and more games do support dual core - specially stuff like Sup Cmdr !

Really want to be able to up the unit cap in games ... as anything over 500 just gets unplayable with more than 3 players involved ...

There's a significant difference in Quake 4

not all that good, members market had some good deals, i sold my opteron 146 for £45 inc delivery and my cpu hit 2.9ghz at below stock volts.
have a rummage in the members market, some nice deals on there.

if all you have is a x1900 and 2 gb od ddr ram, you an easily get one of those asrock boards that will take 2 ddr ram stick and a conroe cpu.

not ideal for me since i have 4 sticks of ddr1 and no mobo for conroe will take that many ddr1 sticks.

yea if your going for a new s939 cpu then get a dual core one, but if you do stuff that does not warrant the use of a dual core then make sure you get no less than a single core s939 that can do 2.8ghz or more. and make sure you get it for a good price too.

yep, 37 quid for sandy 3700, pair it up with an asrock mobo and 1gb of value ram from corsair etc and you got yourself a proper cheapo pc which is good enough for doing work on, surfing the net and still has some ooomph for gaming.
