I'm after gettin a new speaker setup for christmas.. however I'm not very clued up on the available sets atm..

I'm looking between £30 and £70..
Would like at least 5.1.. 7.1 if possible..

What are my best options?

I've seen the creative sets.. but are they any good?

Will mainly be used for games and a little music.
Will be plugged into onboard ac97 for a few months then possibly an audigy 4 after that.

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

For that budget forget multi-channel. Just get active 2.0 speakers. Some good quality active PC speakers with quality drivers, and decent size, ie not 1" multi-range.

As Squiffy says, multichannel isn't up to much at this budget. rbk442's suggestion of Logitech X-530s are probably about the best choice if you must have it though.

For 2.1 look at Creative I-Trigue 3200 for the lower end of your budget and the Acoustic Energy Aego M 2.1 if possible for the top (very highly regarded). Around the middle the Logitech Z-4 2.1 is supposed to be good :)

If you can stretch to the Aego's, don't even hesitate. They are superb and very highly regraded. They got 5* in What-hifi a while back i remember. I have a set and love them, never going back to something by creative etc.

Ok... New developments..

Since I decided to wait and save.. I've got a budget of ~£250 now..
Since this is the only part of my system I can't see me upgrading totally within the next 2 years.. what should I go for?

The room I'll install it in is a perfect rectangle about 8ft by 12ft..
I'm thinking 5.1 as 7.1 is probably overkill for the size of the room..

Also.. should I get a seperate s/c as well.. as I'm running onboard audio atm.. all be it 7.1 spec.

Thanks for yet more info.. and hopefully more suggestions :)

I've seen a set of Logitech Z-5450's for £190inc.. should I get them for that price?

How are the wireless rear speakers powered though?

I wouldn't. Like you say, 5.1 is probably overkill for the room. The rear speakers are mains powered as far as i'm aware. The sound is send via Wi-Fi (with some complaints it interferes with other devices).

Since you've also mentioned you don't want to be upgrading soon, PC speakers arn't ideal. They are not known for reliability and you will probably quite quickly want something more satisfactory. My suggestion of second hand bookshelf speakers and amp with M-audio 2496 card is what i'm sticking to for your £250 budget. Will offer stereo sound of far superior quality to PC speakers and should work for many many years no hassle :) . Only problem is if you really can't fit the speakers in?

You can always fit the speakers in ;)

I should know - I've been carting round a pair of ESL 57s for years :D
