Currently I've the Logitech X-140 which is connected to the PC used for playing 320KBPS music, I was looking into either a subwoofer or a 5.1 speaker which is used for playing 320KBPS music, gaming and movies on TV, which should I go for?

Acoustic Energy Aego M 2.1 would be fantastic, or possibly Harman Kardon Soundsticks III.

You would have to pay a lot more to get a 5.1 set of comparable quality.

If you do decide to go for 5.1 speakers, make sure you can place them properly. I've seen a few people just place them all on the desk in front of them. Doing that negates the whole point of 5.1 speakers. If you can't place them properly, 2.1 speakers are the better option.

At that price range I would go for 2.1 the speakers would be better quality if only two. I have a 5.1 system but only use it as 2.1 because setting up the 5.1 is a pain.

some logitech x-530 or 540 5.1 speakers
Logitech X-530 looks good and is within my budget

If I go for 5.1 speakers, I'll properly place the main unit on the floor and the speakers on the desk

What's the difference between subwoofer and 5.1 speaker?

So it's hard to setup 5.1 speakers?

The prices of 2.1 and 5.1 speakers are nearly the same, so should I go for 5.1 speakers?

I have been suggested that the Logitech X-530 is the best within my budget, what are your thoughts?

If I go for 5.1 speakers said:
5.1 speaker systam has 4 satallite speakers (2front left and right and 2 rear left and right) a front (centre) speaker and a subwoofer.
2.1 speaker systam has 2 front speakers (ledt and right) and a subwoofer

5.1 is only worth it if you actually set it up as 5.1 (meaning 2 front, 2 rear, center (5) and subwoofer (.1) = 5.1 lol. The 5.1 won't make a difference to music really, as it's usually in stereo. Movies benefit from 5.1 and games can too. Personally I don't have space to set up my rear speakers. I find 2.1 to be very convenient, sounds great and I'd rather have 2 great speakers and a subwoofer than 5 okay/possibly cheap speakers and a subwoofer.

It's not hard to set up 5.1, it's tricky to fine tune your surround sound though. Need's a good sound card.

Don't go for a 5.1 and put all speakers on the desk, completely pointless. Unless you run the satellite speakers in double stereo, 2 of them won't be doing anything, and if they are you will be hearing things behind you in front of you. The speakers are 2 for front and 2 for rear. Just foolish when people do this. If you will have speakers on desk PLEASE for the love of god get a 2.1 stereo system. Also you will have loads of unnecessary cables.

You wouldn't buy a pair of headphones with all the speakers in 1 ear. So makes no sense to have rear speakers in front of you.

I don't believe you really understood my first post.

If you purchase a 2 speaker system the quality of the speakers is likely to be much greater than the 5 speaker system at the same price sub woofer included. If you won't use speakers in a surround then you have no reason to buy a 5.1 system. What you need is 2.1 this is typically the desktop speaker setup.

x-530's are good speakers

heres how ive set mine up position wise, you can even drill the wall and wall mount them

its easy just find a place to stand your rear surround speakers, either behind your pc chair or at the side, then you can hear enemies approaching behind you ect

Your budget is £50.

2 speakers = £25 each
5 speakers = £5 each (not even putting the cost of a subwoofer in here).

Now imagine how awful a £10 2.0 speaker setup would sound!

Go for less speakers and higher quality. 5.1 deserves hi-fi quality speakers in the £1000 range.
