Hey all my birthday is coming up soon and my G/F is buying me a nice shiny SSD, happy days

Ive not a clue on which one to choose from but my brother has the
Crucial M4 256GB
He is very impressed with it

Ive read a few reviews on the Samsung 840 SSD's and they seem to top the polls.

My specs are

MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD5

CPU: Intel Core i5 750,

PSU: Corsair HX 750W PSU

GPU: MSi Lightning 7970

RAM: Corsair DDR3 8GB

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

HDD 1:Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache

HDD 2: Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache

Price range around £160

theres a few samsung drives out there but what are the differences between them??

So what do you guys recommend?

Overall im quite happy with my M4 256GB (and got it at a good price) but if I had to spend the money over again I would go for a samsung 830 256GB even though it would have been more.
The odd drive missing at boot and reboot/power cycling to get it detected is a pain when it happens (although been fine for a while now).

As to the samsung models:
830 - last gen top of the line
840 pro - current top of the line, requires selling off a portion of soul
840 - budget version, uses newer (realworld unproven) tlc nand, preforms very well in mixed (read/write/variable QD) usage benches (see Anand review) despite lower raw performance numbers.

I've had a Crucial C300 64Gb, Crucial M4 128Gb and just installed a Samsung 830 256Gb. A small thing I know but I have to say I love the design and look of the Samsung casing.
They have all been great with no issues at all but I learnt the lesson to buy enough space in the first place the hard way. The smaller SSDs have been great for the laptop in the end though :)
I think that your decision to go for 256Gb is a good one and am sure you will be pleased with and 840 or M4.

I don't know if anything has changed in the last month but when I was asking a similar question I was told 840 pro > 830 > 840(budget) but as the 840pro was new technology to stay clear until it had been thoroughly tested.

it depends on your board, for sandybridge/ivybridge then the sata3 ssd's are the obv choice, for sata2 boards like the ops p55 he will only see sata2 speeds at the most

the best value all rounder atm for all boards sata2/3 is the 256gb samsung 830 imo

no the intel are the best regarding speed/reliability,the early marvell sata3 ports are poor also

and no you wont notice any difference, all sata3 ssd's are backwards compatible with sata2,they will just run at sata2 speeds which will still transform your pc performance
