I'm just about to reformat my PC to remove a load of junk I'm too lazy to do manually, but I've got a bit of a choice to make.
My PC has been running a 60gb OCZ vertex 2e absolutely fine for years but I've also got a 256gb Plextor M2S spare that I used in a laptop that I'm getting rid of.
Storage space isn't an issue (but a nice bonus), my problem is figuring out which is faster for real world usage.
My options are:
Carry on with the vertex.
Use the M2S in SATA 2 mode.
Use the M2S in SATA 3 mode but have my PCIE lane cut to x8 (mobo limitation).
Which would you guys go for? Raw speed says M2S but I'm not sure how reliably the mbps figures translate to usage, and I'm not sure what I'm looking at with IOPs.
SATA 2 vs 3 is easy as my mobo can toggle between the two. I can change that on the fly should I find it's not impacting my GPU too much with the loss of lanes.
For reference the speeds are as follows:
Vertex-
Max Read: up to 285MB/s
Max Write: up to 275MB/s
Sustained Write: up to 250MB/s
Random Write 4KB (Aligned): 50,000 IOPS
M2S-
Max Read: up to 480MB/s
Max Write: up to 330MB/s
Sustained Write: up to ?MB/s
Random Write 4KB (Aligned): 18,000 IOPS
M2S wins in read/write and Vertex takes it with IOPs.
