Which SSD to buy?

I have a relatively 'old' Intel X 25 Gen 2 and I'm very happy with it. The write speeds are not that fast but the read speeds are up around 260Gb and since I only use it as an OS drive it is fine and the PC is very responsive. From reading the threads on here I'm glad I went for the Intel because they seem to have a reputation for reliability whereas OCZ drives seem to be falling over quite regularly.

I just bought myself an Intel 320 160GB SSD. It's not the fastest drive around, but since I'm limited to SATA 2, and I wanted reliability too, I thought it would be best.

So far, I've not been disappointed. The boot speeds are great, applications are snappy. Very good drive :)

price wise i don't think the original vertex 120GB can be beaten at the moment.
i would love to know if anyone has changed from one of these first generation drives to one of the newer ones and have they really noticed any significant difference, or is it just that first step from mechanical to SSD that is the clincher?

If you have a SATA III motherboard then when you switch from a SATA II SSD to SATA you will see a big difference. I moved from Intel X-25 to M4 and there was a wow factor in speed difference between the two SSD's.

However, I only upgraded because I needed a bigger SSD. Had I not needed more storage I would have stayed with the Intel because it was no slouch. I only recommend upgrading if you are getting a bigger drive otherwise it seems a little pointless.

I'd go for the higher capacity older models. But it really depends on your preference and how you like to manage files over multiple drives.
