Which SSD?

I'm looking to replace the 5400rpm 320gb hard drive currently in my 2010 13.3" MBP with an SSD. Thing is choosing one which works well with OSX bearing in mind TRIM is not supported.

I’m currently using a 60GB OCZ Vertex 2E in my Win7 desktop, which performs extremely well, but could do with a drive larger than 60GB for the MBP as it also has Win7 installed through Parallels.
Any recommendations? - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-009-CS&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1427 seems a good price, but not sure how well JMicron controller works with MBP’s.

Cheers

I did have a look at the intel ones, but with the slower write speed when compared to other models plus the fact the intel SSD app appears to be for Windows only put me off.

Anyone using or had experience with MBP and SSD?

Cheers

Anandtech recommends an SSD based on the Sandforce controller as it has a superior garbage collecting firmware.

Anandtech said:
I often get questions from Mac users asking what the best SSD is for OS X. Since Apple still won’t support TRIM you need a very resilient drive under OS X. That path leads you to SandForce. Pick up a Corsair Force, OCZ Vertex 2, G.Skill Phoenix or whatever SF drive tickles your fancy if you want the best of the best in your Mac.

If 25nm NAND wasn't coming out this year I would've got a 128GB Vertex 2E.

If you really want to buy now, go with the Anandtech advice. If you can wait for the new stuff then I would definitely wait.

I wouldn't worry about the write speed of the Intels too much - that's just one characteristic of the drive, and you should ask yourself how often are you writing massive files to disk? If you're coming from a 5400 mechanical drive then the overall improvement will soon make you forget that particular statistic.

Thanks for the replies, very helpful. That Antech article has pointed me in the right direction.

I might hang on to see if 25nm arrives as penned in Q4

Last week i caved and stuck in a 256gb crucial c300 into my 09 15' mbp and its been amazing! I dont really know the ins and outs of SSD's but going on how fast its been im guessing anything over the 5400 drive that was in there is a bonus :)

I got a regular Crucial CT128M225 128Gb one in my MacBook Pro and it's fantastic.

I have no idea if it's the quickest one on the market but it works perfectly and gives massively improved performance over the old 7200rpm drive I had.

Well over the weekend I ordered an MCE Optibay, my intention being to use an SSD for the OS and main apps and then the put music and bulk etc on the 320gb.

Will keep you posted.
