Just ordered a new Alienware laptop MX17 R4 and want to order an SSD for it. Not bothered about anything larger than 128GB as the laptop has a 500GB drive for storage. Which would you reccomend --

Its tempting to go for something like this - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-072-OC&tool=3 however does not seem a lot of point as 128gb seems to me like enough when having a 500gb storage drive

520 series are every bit as good as reported

The Intel 520 is probably the best Sandforce-based SSD around, but still suffers from the F4 BSOD issue (especially with laptops and Macs - check Intel's SSD forum). Although my 520 performed amazingly between crashes, I'd advise you to avoid all SF-2281 drives.

+1 for the Samsung 830 (my 520 replacement) or the M4.

NB. I know you don't need it now, but :
128gb 830 ~£90
256gb 830 ~£135 (after £20 cashback). Twice the capacity (and faster writes) for 50% more cash.
