Which SSD?

Currently looking at upgrading SSD as 240gb isn't enough for me. Will most likely give away the 240 so we'll take that out of the equation.

Shortlisted it down to (links);
Samsung 512GB SSD 840 PRO
OCZ Vector 512GB

Normally I'd just choose OCZ and be done with it but OCZ as a company aren't doing well, and I don't particularly want a dead drive without a company to return it to..

Haven't had any Samsung component products so no experience with them, what are they like for reliability/failure rate?

The Vector is according to benchmarks the fastest drive available at the minute, the problem with OCZ is that they have long been associated with firmware problems and reliability. Whether that is now true is anyone's guess, but the latest rumors are that OCZ are likely to pull out of the Consumer market to focus on enterprise and OEM drives.

Samsung on the other hand, have a decent record for reliability, and are one of the biggest OEM suppliers, supplying SSDs for manufacturers such as Apple. In reality the 840Pro is unnoticably slower than the Vector ,and if you are really concerned about reliability would be my choice.

The Crucial M4 is also worth consideration especially as it's almost £100 cheaper than the Samsung and OCZ... It is a slightly older design, but has proven reliability and has only slightly slower sequential write speeds.

Get the OCZ, they're own controller is quicker and more reliable than Samsung.

Quicker yes, more reliable - doubtful. The Vector uses a new proprietary controller the Indilinx Barefoot 3 controller versus Samsungs ARM-based Controller, that has evolved slightly from the one used in the 830 Drives (itself an evolution of the Samsung 470 OEM SSDs iirc).

Samsung are trusted to supply SSDs to many manufacturers as an OEM, and independently many people have tested the manufacturers write endurance claims and found them to be very underspecified (i.e. you can write far more to the drive than Samsung claim before the NAND fails).

Samsung also manufacturer their own NAND - unlike OCZ, who simply repackage NAND bought from other sources.

Count the Samsung vs OCZ failures on OcUK.

Thats a one sided argument though....

Count the sales of both, and also count the people who don't post when they are happy with their product...

Only figures you can use are supplier return rates, but most suppliers do not release these for obvious reasons.

OcUK forum <> rest of world....

Guarantee that Samsung have shipped far more SSDs than OCZ ever will - simply due to OEM products, that and elements of their SSD tech can be found everywhere e.g. how many Samsung Phones are shipped which use wait for it... Samsung NAND?
