Hi all

I currently have a Geforce 9800 gx2 but im unsure which gfx to upgrade to atm my rig looks like this

Processor: Intel Core Quad cpu @ 2.40ghz 3.01 ghz
Memory: 4.00 GB
System Type: 64 bit Operating system
Sound Card: Realtech HiDefinition
Gfx Card: Nvidia Geforce 9800 Gx2

Thanks :)

Well i would get the 5870 over the gtx 295, yes the gtx 295 may get more fps in games but its dual gpu, where as 5870 is single. Also, gtx 295 only beats it by only a few fps and the new ati 5870, drivers will mature which means better performance. You could always get 2 5850's depending on your mobo

Wow, that's a massive budget. To be honest, if you went for a single 5850 you will have enough gaming power to play games at top settings for a good long while. You could always add a second in the future if your motherboard supports crossfire.

If you want to spend the whole of your budget then you could wait for the 5870X2 to come out (a month to go I hear), looks like it should put the super powerful GTX 295 in its place.

See im kinda unsure if my motherboard supports Xfire or anything, the comp i brought was actually from Ocuk i think it was called the "ultima" had it since september last year.
Any idea on how to check ?

Alright heres the spec of the motherboard

Manufacturer: Abit
Model IP35 PRO (P35+iCH9R) 1.0
Chipset: Intel p35/G33/G31

Not sure if it supports SLi or Crossfire.
Bare in mind i have the Antec 900 case that should fit in any sized gfx card right?

That board can do Crossfire, but i don't think its worth it as the second slot will only run at 4x, and that will seriously hamper the performance, be best of getting a 5870 with that budget, awesome cards. :)

I would suggest going for the ASUS version. A few quid more, but it has an extra year of warranty and includes "voltage tweak technology". This sets up an overclock on the card that gives you a nice overclock - and it is supported under the warranty :D

Budget is about £360

Ok, how desperate are you to upgrade ASAP?

I really would suggest waiting for Nvidia to release their GT300 series. I'm sure it won't be long before they release a dual GPU graphics card which will trounce 2X GTX295 Mars Editions in SLI! Seriously man, we'll be talking about
a card which will put Crysis to shame on a 30" monitor! 40fps minimum atleast! ;)

Yeah id go for it, although would really depend if it would fit in your case, as you need about 11.5 inches to get one in as they absolutely massive cards.

If you can't fit one, then id go for the 5850, as theya re only 9.5 inches long, not much slower than the 70, but £100 cheaper.

Apparently the GT300 series is delayed until mid next year or so but im just a geek when it comes to upgrading, just wanna keep with the times lol

Well not sure how true it is, but Nvidia confirmed its coming out in November, but they could only be saying that to stop people buying ATi's 5 series, so they'll wait for it.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys i think ill give the 5870 a whirl see how it goes, then perhaps next year ill grab a Gt300 or so lol im hoping the 5870 will fit in the antec 900 case

Yea, mid next year is a bit off the mark. Last I heard was Nvidia were aiming for a November launch, in time for black Friday.

That's what I heard. Like ATI, they're coinciding the launch with Windows 7, as one does. :D

God you really have a lot of spare cash don't ya?

I don't want to see you starting a thread in november saying you wished you'd waited for the GT300 series though. ;)
