I am in a bit of a hurry to upgrade my PC so waiting for conroe/amd price cuts is not really an option and need some advice on an upgrade to my motherboard and processor, what I cant decide is to go socket 939 and get better performance or go AM2 and future proof

I have come up with the following options:

AM2 system

MY-095-CS Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-5400 TwinX (2x1GB) (MY-095-CS)
£114.95 £114.95
MB-144-AS Asus M2N-SLi Deluxe (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-144-AS)
£94.95 £94.95
CP-166-AM AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail (CP-166-AM)
£181.95 £181.95
Subtotal £391.85
VAT £68.58
Total £460.43

or Socket 939

MB-014-DF DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-014-DF)
£74.95 £74.95
CP-127-AM AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA4400CDBOX) (CP-127-AM)
£274.95 £274.95
Subtotal £349.90
VAT £61.24
Total £411.14

with 939 I can keep my existing memory and get an X1900XT or if I go AM2 it will be an X1800XT or 7900GT for the graphics

If anyone can come up with some better options than above please feel free

Any help/advice will be much appreciated,

Thanks :)

939 For The Win!

Better gfx, and better cpu. Maybe get some flashy lights too :D

How come you can't wait, it's only a month away?

I'd probably go AM2. The X1800XT is a fine graphics solution and it's that little bit more future proof.

I'd go AM2. Pick up an X1800 or whatever you can afford, and hang on to it til Vista hits. Then you'll still have a current setup and you can just throw in a DX10 card.

If I go AM2, is the motherboard I picked out any good?

Should I just get the cheapest AM2 chip available now (AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.80GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail (CP-162-AM) for £63
and get a better dual core chip when the prices drop, I could probably get £40 for the A3000 when the current prices drop I suppose

What do you think?

What are you running at the moment ??

If you already have a 939 rig if it has pcie then just upgrade the gcard for now as it will be compatable with both am2 conroe and some 939 mobo's

Also what do you use your pc for??

I am running a shuttle SN85G with a 3700 at the moment (skt 754) with 2GB ram and an X800XL AGP.

I mainly use the PC for gameing and decoding, internet etc. I have a 24" Dell monitor atm and the graphics is starting to struggle a bit

Just upgradeing the graphics is not an option as I have a buyer for my current PC and he is desperate as his PC went pop!

i would personally go for the AM2 system but switch the ASUS SLI board with MSI K9N Platinum and i would also get the 7900GT and ramp up the core/memory clocks, AM2 is more future proof and theres not point in getting SLI board if its unlikely you will be going down that route.

Is the only difference between the AM2 board selected above and the Asus M2N-E (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-147-AS) the SLi feature, or are there other elements missing as well?

Not too keen on MSI boards :o
