Currently i have:

Corsair TX650w
Asus P5Q-Pro
2x2gb OZC Gold Edition 8500+
Intel E5300
EVGA 9800GTX+ 512mb SCC
Corsair H50 CPU Cooler
Antec 300

Would it be worth sticking with the core2, or would it be better selling this system and building a newer I5/I7 system? Will have around £1700 to spend.

Meh, that's a great board, you could get a used Q6600 (i think there's one in the MM at the minute) to pull you through until there's a worthwhile upgrade from that.

Done the spec below, assuming you will be keeping the case, PSU and drives.

I would just buy a better dual or C2Q and a better graphics card and stick with what you have - assuming you are a gamer. You could get a used Q9550/Q9650 and a new 5850 and have an excellent rig. It's really not worth spending £1700. Use it for something more important.

RJC forgot a fan as the stock cooler on the i7 is nothing short of pathetic
thwe noctua NH U12P is not pretty but very effective for cooling

The op has the Corsair H50 which I assume has the I7 brackets.

Forgot to put that in my post.

RJC, that looks like a good spec, altough i think i'd change to the XFX graphics card and not really sure i'd need a solid state tbh. I don't really see a huge benefit to ssd's
