hi. I have used newsleecher for years but now it seems they want to charge monthly. what alternative s are there that will be similar to use and free. I pay for newsdemon monthly so I dont want to pay for newsleecher

If you've previously purchased Newsleecher, you can still use the major release version that was current during your paid period. Alternative similar free clients that I can think of would be alt.binz & Grabit.

Personally I use SABnzbd together with a nzb indexing site.

nzb downloaders aren't really equivalent to a full usenet client with binary support.

i ran into problems with newsleecher the keys i have a re no longer accepted, tried downloading old versions but it won't have them.

For a full newsreader, Newsbin was always my favourite. Haven't used it for some time though as, like most other responses, SABnzbd suits my needs these days.

It should work as I had to do something similar the other day. In my case I had to go back to version 5 beta 9 which was when my original subscription ended. Nothing after that works, but everything before is fine.

this is whats happening to me. I tried sabnzbd and like it. thanks for your help

Why aren't they? Personally I find them are a superior solution, easy find, easy grab.

The issue is that they are only useful if you have a decent nzb indexing site. Sabnzbd is brilliant, particularly when used with sickbeard etc, but some people like full access to usenet groups, which this does not provide.

I use both Sabnzbd and Newsbin, used to use newsleecher as their search was great but this has declined whilst the cost has risen.

I wouldn't call them superior. Definitely more convenient than downloading all the headers for a newsgroup.

NZBs applications just make usenet easy for the napster/torrent/*insert file sharing technology* generation. Those people that couldn't (or couldn't be bothered) to work out how to use usenet.

Pros - It makes lots of things easier to find.
Cons - It made usenet so popular that it became a big target for the entertainment industry, whereas beforehand it quite happily sat there quietly carrying on mostly unnoticed.
