Which viewpoint do you use in racing games and why?

Personally I pretty much always use the standard follow cam, which is closest to the car. It just feels far more natural while using a controller.

Using the cockpit or bonnet viewpoint is immersive but to me feels wrong on a controller, adding to this I like to see the lovely car as it drives rather than an ugly dashboard/bonnet.

I usually use the in-car view. the one with least/no view of car in it. In some games where driving isn't the whole game (E.G. GTA) I use the behind car view.

Main reason is that I get a better feel for the cornering and speed using the in-car view.

Always outside view, not too close. I can't tell which direction the car is facing properly in the first person view, not like real driving where you can feel which direction its going :p

In some cars on GT5 (usually older ones) I might use in car view, as there is lots of windscreen and its not too bad. But some are ridiculous and its like looking through a letterbox, so I would go bonnet or chase.

Agree on liking to look at my car also, not just a bonnet.

On TDU2 I've become used to the closest chase.

The problem I have is that the in-car view doesn't give you the feel of what the car is doing (how can it?), but the behind-the-car view is just wrong!

However I try to stick with the in-car view as it seems right!

Follow, so that I can see other cars around me. I find it impossible to not crash into people when I can't see things around me from the cockpit. I reckon head tracking would fix things a bit if you could glance at mirrors and so on, but that's just too hard to do with a controller at speed.

Bonnet cam for me mostly, when i had GT5 though id use the cockpit view more as it seemed a lot better than other racers. Actually looked like you were sitting in the car instead of in the back seat looking out a tiny window like most racing games ive played seem to have it set at.

I normally use the follow cam because I like to see all around the car. When people are at the side of me I can take the corner better etc and block them out. If I want it to feel faster I'll use the cockpit view, more simulted.

Bumper cam for me. I used to use follow on GT1+2, but switched to bumper and my times greatly improved, so used it ever since.
I can judge apex's more accurately and find it easier to feel what the car is doing. (before seeing what it's doing in follow cam)

But like what's been said, it's harder to judge other cars around you and if you tucked up behind one car, you can see what's coming up on the track.

As much as I love chase view, not many designers put much effort into the handling anymore. It's usually woeful in comparison to the laptime you can put in with bumper/bonnet view.

For me chase view is the best view, people spank themselves off over how great the latest car game looks, "OMG no jaggies on the cars window pillars" then race in car.

I like to see the cars that these developers have spent months designing.

The best driving games of all time where best in chase view, sega rally and Daytona ;)

Why the **** isn't daytona an 8 player XBLA arcade game.

Which camera I use depends on the game for me or what I'm doing in the game.

Example: Need for Speed Hot Pursuit. Bonnet cam for races as a racer and chase view as a cop for chases, just found that easier for taking people out.

In TDU2 I've been mainly using chase view again except when going for the achievement for using the internal view :p

Used to use like a 3rd person one where you can see the whole car. Mate told me to try the inside/speedo view (1st person) where you can see the dials and i've never looked back. Best camera to use if you want to race properly and accurately.
