I have just finished my first build & installed Windows Vista Home premium 64 bit edition & am now looking for a really good virus protection program which also offers excellent protection for online surfing for internet banking, etc.

What do you recommend?

nod32 seems to be the av software of choice these days. I'm just using the zonealarm one I got free through my ISP and haven't had any problems though.

Personally I use PC-cillin right now... mainly because a license was offered to me & before that I was on Norton   :(

After trying NOD32, I would recommend it. My main reason is the fact that it uses little resources.

Not sure what Avast is like, but it's free and a lot of people recommend it :)

You can get a free version of Kaspersky that AOL have released called Active Virus Shield which is based on Kaspersky AV 6:

I recently moved from NOD32 to this, and I have no complaints at all. I liked the fact that NOD was 'quiet' and didn't tell me about everything it did. AVS is the same, it just sits there doing it's thing without getting on my wick.

On a old computer, would AOL Active Virus Shield be better than Avast free edition?

Win XP
AMD Duron 1400
256MB RAM

Changed the virus checker from AVG free edition (being used for low resources) to Avast free edition. Also received Win XP May Malicious software removeal tool update.

After doing a complete scan with Avast it reported:
Sign of "Win32:Spyware-gen[Trj]" has been found in Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\Quarantine\...

I know the computer owner doesn't do complete scan's, so after a more pro-active free scanner. But don't want to cripple system any more.
