Hi all sorry for another spec me thread! I bought my oculus rift cv1 when it first came out and I liked it but I wasn’t blown away by it and I’ve not really used it that much. My computer was only a 7700k and 1080ti back then though. I’d quite like to try a newer version of a vr headset to see how the tech has changed. I tried my rift cv1 today and found it pretty rubbish.

I will be using the headset for sit down experiences at the computer playing racing games/flight sims or just general vr stuff without moving around as much.

I have a virgin super hub 5 router which is wifi 6 connected to my computer by Ethernet and the router is at my desk so would a quest 2 be ok for wireless or is it worth buying the usb c cable to connect?

My computer specs are 12700k, 32gb ram and a 3080 graphics card. I wear glasses because I’m short sighted but I briefly wore my friends quest 2 without my glasses and could see and read ok enough.

Short summary, looking for a new headset for sit down experiences. Quest 2, Pico 4?

Thanks!

Pretty much anything out now is an upgrade on the CV1.

If your only interested in PCVR you can prob pickup a cheap Rift-S 2nd hand, or a quest 2 as above, the latter is heavier for obvious reasons.

Thanks for the quick replies. I’m leaning towards a quest 2 either new or second hand. Is it essential to get the cable to pair it to the pc or will I be ok over wifi as my router is an arms length away?

A cable will allow you to massively improve the image quality for some games that need it - for example Skyrim looks compressed and muddy on wireless on Q2, but looks very good on a cable with the bitrate upped to 500. Racing Sims also look better on a cable.

Most games look great on Wireless. You won't believe how much sharper they look than the CV1. Likely you will miss the OLED colours though. Q2 has greyish blacks as it's an LCD. Quest Pro looks much better, but that's a £1000...

Another option to tide you over until Q3 is a second hand Quest 1 which is OLED and probably can be got really cheaply. It too can do wireless or wired but is limited to 72hz. It's a step up from a CV1 for PCVR but in terms of clarity nowhere near as sharp as a Q2. It is however end of life so if the controllers break you can't get replacements.

I’d definitely prefer the better image quality so the quest 2 sounds better and better. I’d get the cable to connect it too. Can the quest 2 go over glasses or are prescription lenses worth it? Reading text on my monitor is blurry without my glasses.

Yep, my vote is Quest 2. Also get some prescription lens inserts too rather than squeeze glasses and head in. Massive upgrade from Rift’s screen door effect visuals

just seated? I would consider a reverb G2 2nd hand (brand new is too expensive). make sure it has the V2 cable
personally I would say you have lasted this long with the rift. if you go new I would wait for quest 3 or if must be now and new consider Pico 4

How tied into the Oculus ecosystem are you? I’m in the same boat and have quite a few games that I really enjoy that would be unplayable if I moved away from Oculus/Meta.

One of the great things about the Quest headsets is they work really well with Oculus PC games. It's great to be able to revisit classic Oculus games with hugely improved resolution and clarity.

You can use the Revive software to play Oculus/meta titles on non oculus headsets

That's a very good point - I used that with my Index but not all games work, and there can be performance issues. I played through Lone Echo 2 on the Index, and it didn't perform well. Robo Recall worked amazingly well though.

While there are obviously far better headsets out there these days, have you tried to do anything to improve your visuals like supersampling?

Sorry to hijack your thread OP. But I'm in the same boat as you. Same old headset and GPU. Now I have the same CPI and GPU as you now :D

@Uncle Petey is the supersampling in the Nvidia settings? Anything else to make it look a little better now that I have a better GPU.

Wife is out, kids at my mums, so decided to dig it out last night after 3/4 years of it been under the bed.

For games that launch with an Oculus option from whatever platform, use Oculus tray tool.
For Steam games that use Steam VR, render resolution in Steam VR settings.
You should be able to get away with anything from 1.6-2.0 (160-200%) with your setup in most games.
