Which wireless adapter for around £10?

My old US robotics adapter broke the other day and I am currently using a netgear WG111T, which is very poor after looking at reviews of it and having problems with it myself.


So I need a new one for around £10 that won't disconnect when dll over night, playing online games.


My OS is windows 7 64 bit and our internet is currently with virgin 10MB DL/1MB UL however we may be moving to BT infinity 40MB soon.


And the wireless router is netgear Wireless-G Router WGR614 v9 (http://support.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2591)


I am currently looking at these 2:

Which one is better?

Are there any others that you would recommend for the same price that is better than them and if so why?

I've got the TP-Link one you linked, but the package that included a cradle so model name ended in NC instead of N.

I would probably look at a different brand if buying again. Regularly on 3 bar strength (not gone through all channels yet). And suffer a strange issue with having to restart router for it to connect to every so often (laptops not affected). Although this could be an issue with the Belkin modem router I'm using.

The TP-Link drivers (if a v3 version) are fom mid 2010. And not found any Atheros supplied newer version, according to WikiDevi.
 
It's in the same room along the same wall. But room is U shaped.

Wi-Fi fitted computer at top of left vertical part of U and router top of right vertical part. If that makes sense. Distance probably under 4m if went direct line of sight.

Currently on 3 bar strength, but 4 bars strength is more common although not today. Not in a router heavy Wi-Fi area (might be other sources of interference). And not gone through all the router Wi-Fi channels to see if it improves.

Loaned it to someone in a highly congested Wi-Fi area, it failed to keep connection to a BT HomeHub 2.0. Their laptops were able to (because they have better internal aerials).

Does anyone here own the OCUK adapter? If yes, how does it perform?

Is the OCUK adapter by a manufacturer that does other brands like netgear or something?

Sort of like with the OCUK water coolers/pumps for the CPU that are by the same manufacturer that do corsair hydro water pumps/coolers.

It does look good, but I am on a very tight budget :o (cheap skate I know :p).

However if more people post their thoughts here about those 2 that I have linked and turns out that they aren't great overall then I may just have to pay the extra for a better one like that :)

Honestly for an extra £3.71 over the other TP-Link one I'd go for the one with the antenna on the outside as you should get much better signal reception and transmission with it.

Regarding the OcUK one (Getnet GN-621U) I managed to find over 60 personal reviews of the item within a few seconds on another site, which has them out of stock atm.

Edit the Edimax also would work with the external antenna.

I've seen inside some of these things and the antenna is just a little strip of metal on the PCB. A sticky out antenna must be loads better than this, otherwise they wouldn't have some top of the range models with antenna hook up connectors.

Ok, I will then go for either the edimax one or the TP-link with the antenna :)

So, which one between those 2 now would you all recommend?


Also just found that place with 62 reviews for the getnet/OCUK adapter, seems decent for the price.


And yeah I agree that the antenna ones probably are a lot better for strong consistent signals.


I also presume that those 2 that I am now looking at will work ok with my current router?

Ok, after reading some reviews on the edimax one it seems like some people have problems with the signal fluctuating a lot and saying that your better of getting one with the internal antenna, so I may just go ahead with this one:

Your router is just a wireless G device so....

You wont be able to use the N function of the TP-link device but everything works just fine on G.

I've got a 300Mbps N router and I find it no better than a 54Mbps G router, after all these speeds are all theoretical.
 
I take that as a yes then :p

Wasn't too sure as I have read some reviews for adapters where people have said that it didn't work with their wireless routers, so wasn't too sure about mine with that adapter since it isn't that great and pretty cheap.
