I've got a Canon 30D and have just ordered a Speedlite 430EXii. I can't justify getting a Canon ST-E2 wireless trigger as I'm aware there are a bunch of much cheaper third party alternatives, but which one to get?

Does anyone have any advice?

TIA :D

I was thinking of getting a 602 and probably will at some point. However, I found a guy who makes a 10m off camera cord! I'm going to start with that (by the way it costs the same as a pair of 602s but at least i get to keep ettl!) :)

I don't think I've ever used ETTL with off camera flash, and I never will.

Do yourself a favour and just get the 602's if they cost the same. You get SO much more control when not using ETTL.

I have 10 month old twins. I like to have an off camera flash even if its just putting the flash on a worksurface or something - ETTL lets me take a quick shot before they get bored and start crying etc :)

A longer off camera cord would have its uses... you could get the flash off camera and use high speed sync, which you can't do with (most) wireless triggers. The curly Canon cord isn't really long enough. If you do want to be more creative, you don't have to shoot ETTL - you can switch the flash to manual.

I generally use wireless manual flash, but find ETTL is handy occasionally - for example for grabbing a quick shot of the dogs, where you might not have chance to fiddle about before the moment's gone.

Job done, thanks! Ordered some RF-602s from a big retailer, they appear to be identical to the ones on an auction site, except they have a different brand name (BV & Jo???). I went with the big retailer as I don't like the auction site, and they came with leads for the same price.

Cheers!
