Which wireless-N router to use with Be?

So, I've been running a DG834N on my Be line for quite a while but it's stability is pretty poor and seems to be getting worse. It hangs/crashes on a fairly regular basis, particularly if wireless in enabled. When it hangs it requires the power to pulled from it twice now, after the first time it just displays a red circle once power is restored.

Googling around this appears to be due to a cooling issue with earlier units and tends to get worse over time until the unit cooks itself.

This has now got to a point where it's irritating enough that I want replace the router with something more reliable.

Needs to have the following:
- Work with Be (ADSL2) .... if it makes any difference I sync at around ~12Mb.
- Have wireless-N support with the usual levels of security.
- Does not need to have a built in switch as it will be connected to a gigabit switch to connect to the wired network
- Needs to be stable when in normal usage (a mixture of the usual things ... not being hammered by torrents the entire time).

if your looking for wireless powah ;) N based, D-Link 2740R is your best bet. or if you want to go for price + performance all Netgear higher N class models.

netgear DGN3500 (not to be confused with the WNR3500) is what i'm getting next month. it doesnt have dual band N, though it does have gigabit nic ports.

What firmware are you running? Have you checked out this:

So far I've found the latest firmware for my GT fantastic. If it keeps up I'll probably just get a wireless n access point and use that with it.

I'm running the latest official firmware. I'm not sure how running a third party firmware will help when the issue appears to be due to a hardware overheating issue?

While the 2740 is great for wireless, the Infinion chipset it uses for the ADSL modem is rubbish! I've had the 2640 & 2740 from TalkTalk and both of them drop sync like crazy. Granted my line is about 18,000 miles long and noisy as hell but my Speedtouch 585v6 holds a stable 9dB SNR now.

To the best of my knowledge BE & O2 use Broadcom chipsets in their DSLAMs so your best bet is to get something Broadcom-based, I think the Netgear DG834N is Broadcom-based but I could be wrong.

It may help because appearances can be deceiving and it costs nothing to try. My netgear needed resetting daily until I tried the dg team firmware. It's well worth a look before you start throwing money at the problem.

I use the DGN2000 at work and its pretty good.
Untill it broke a month ago and although netgear have promised a replacement, I haven't heard from them in a month.

But whatever you do do not get the Netgear DGND3300. its a total POS. it loses connection every couple days (something to do with lease renewal) and will only work well with Be if you have a static IP service. Im not the only one with this problem.

And plus the wireless range on both G and N is atrocious, and N range is actually worse than the G range. the generic Be router has a better range.
Big waste of money.

Not that I'm saying get it, but lease renewal issues can usually be sorted with a firewall rule.

Before you go buying anything else try the third party firmware, My record uptime for my DG834N was something like 2 months using the dgteam firmware. Are you keeping the router upright? as there was a warning label on the side of mine saying not to lay it on it's side as it will over heat.

Yep it's vertical with plenty of free space around it for air flow.

Multiple systems and network accessing devices (although no PS3). These are connected in the most part via an existing wired network infrastructure with wireless only being needed for laptops/netbooks. Router just needs one lan port to connect into the network.

Network is NATed behind the router and only needs as much firewall as a normal consumer grade router has, (no specific additional requirements).

Thought I'd chime in as I am in the same boat looking for a new wireless N router. I have the Netgear DGN2000, which I am RMA-ing tomorrow. I can't get a stable connection to it no matter how many different settings I try. It only ever connects to my brand new wireless N capable Toshiba laptop at 54Mbps unless I disable security, in which case it goes up to 65Mbs -woohoo...This is all for nought anyway, since after connecting for a few seconds the connection drops out and won't reconnect, so if I set up a ping I can see the latency increasing from about 100Ms to unreachable. I've wasted many hours trying to get this POS working, so it's going back. As others have mentioned, it also runs very hot, and you can actually smell a "heated plastic" smell around it when it's on, and this is with it standing on its side, so I wouldn't risk leaving the thing flat on a carpet in case it starts a fire!

Summary: Steer clear of the DGN2000.

Edit: Forgot to say I am also on Be and this thing sometimes connects at only 3Mbs when my usual speed is 11Mbs, so that's another reason for it to go back. My Be router which is about 3 years old always connects at 11Mbs.

i have had valuble information regarding wireless routers.
and the best router wireless you can get with broadcom chipset is the dgnd3300 router.

has wireless N draft.
aswell as broadcom internal ADSL2+ with SNR tweaking.

reason its just that good is becuse it actually tops the dg834GT on wireless power only everything else is its equal.
