Hey ,

Should be getting some new hard drives soon, will most likely be samsungs as I've used them in all my builds and they've been fine.

I've been looking at the Samsung 1TB Drive and the Samsung 640GB drives. Would I get better performance over the 1TB by buying two 640GB drives and putting them in Raid 0 or would I still get better performance by using the single 1TB drive.

I've read around and both drives are supposed to be very fast so I'm pretty usure of what the best solution would be. If someone could link me to some comparisons or there own tests then that would be great.

Thanks :)

They're both pretty much the same speed, the 1TB drive just has the extra platter.
I'd urge you not to bother with RAID 0, unless you do long sustained reads and writes all the time then you'll only see a performance difference in benchmarks.

The main use of the drives will just be running my OS and a place to store virtual machines as the main use of the system the new drive will go into will be to run virtual machines.

I think I will go for the 1TB drive as they do seem to offer very good performance and as said above I don't want the risk of loosing data with Raid 0 plus it's cheaper.

Thanks.

Just something to bear in mind, I have had two of these drives fail in the last 14 Days.
The 1st didn't even survive the 2nd day before SMART errors and windows warnings.
The 2nd lasted just over 2weeks.

Following this I did some more research & found they have a abnormally high failure rate. Infact several retailers are reporting RMA's of 20% but only on the F1 series 32MB Cache models.

Don't get me wrong they are great when they work but I wouldn't recommend them for data storage. I would also consider the WD.

I held off on the 1TB F1's after hearing of problems but I caved in when their pricing reached the lowest point, currently have 60 from 5 different batches and a couple of different revisions. They've all had a very good workout for 2 months so far and none have dropped. Same goes for some 750GB ones (also 32MB cache).

Got a source for that 20% figure?
