looking at the OCUK listings there are a lot of options available but was just wonder how each compares.

ill be looking to play games such as bf2/2142 and possibly rainbow 6 vegas at 1280x1024 or thereabouts

im looking at the x1950pro mainly because my psu wont handle anything more than that (450W ocz modstream) and the price is about right

Get the HIS 512 MB edition - blazing fast at a good price, with plenty of memory and a nice big arctic ice cooler

Beware of Rainbow 6 Vegas though - that is one hell of a rough game on any system, but provided your CPU is good an X1950 PRO should slap it around with ease

just updated my sig with my current setup. will that run it?

also i forgot to mention id be looking for a vaguely silent option......my x850xt is LOUD and im about sick of it now lol

Be aware there is a shortage of leads when you buy the HIS. Depending on your PSU you may need a different power lead.

Info taken from previous posts not from actual experience so have a search and read up before purchase. Great cards by all accounts though.

I am afraid that you wont even be able to run Rainbow 6 Vegas on that setup.
The Processor is amazing, and the RAM is great too. Heck your GPU is powerful, but it is one of the older types of Radeon, which does not support Shader Model 3.0
I am 99% positive that Rainbow 6 Vegas REQUIRES AT LEAST Shader model 3.0 to even load, because it makes use of true flating point HDR and post processing effects, which need SM 3.0 to run, these effects cannot be disabled in Rainbow 6 Vegas because it was built for the 360 which can run SM 3.0 - basically it is a great game, but a lousy console port.... :(

The X1950 PRO will run it BEAUTIFULLY though when combined with that setup, so if you get that X1950 PRO you will be laughing in a beautiful, HDR induced trance :)

The rig in your sig & with a nice new X1950Pro should handle that fine & all other games arround as well :)

As for which X1950Pro, if you want silent then the options are ...

GeCube ATI Radeon X1950 Pro FZ SuperCooled TURBO SILENT TEC/Heatpipe 512MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
This is the card i personally would choose. Great cooler, very quiet.

HIS ATI Radeon X1950 Pro ICEQ 3 TURBO SILENT Heatpipe 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (H195PRQT512DD-R)
Has a very nice cooler as well. Overclcocked on both core & ram above standard specs.

PowerColor ATI Radeon X1950 Pro Extreme SILENT Heatpipe 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
Has the very good Accelero cooler.

Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 Pro ULTIMATE SILENT 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
Again a great aftermarket cooler from Zalman. Card has a nice overclock as standard.

I would go for a powercolor. I have one myself, its almost silent, keeps nice and cool with the arctic cooler and has slightly faster clock speeds to stock. Plus it looks funky with the arctic cooler on it:

What's this like? I was tempted with my new build, but went for a 8800 GTS in the end. That cooler looks serious.

Ive only played arround with one that a mate has & it is one serious card / cooler. Very quiet & runs like a cheetah after a limp gazelle.
Looks swish too, as he has a case with window.

Definitely a window card :)

Does it overclock well?

mate an 8800 GTS whips an X1950 PRO HARD
Hell an 8800 GTS is faster than an X1950 XTX

I wouldn't get the HIS, problems with the fitting of the PCI-E power connectors on those, loads of ppl have had to file/sand them down as they will just not go in.

yeah so go with the powercolor ;)!!! :D

Sorry but in the minimum requirements for RAINBOW 6 VEGAS it clearly says that a shader model 3.0 card is required

*******EDIT*******
it seems there IS a possible workaround for the SM 3.0 requirement, but it requires editing the game files and apparently it can cause serious graphical corruption / anomalies....

was just wondering if i will really be needing the 512mb variants at 1280x1024? i was under the impression that the extra mem is required more for higher resolutions (although that impression is probably wrong!!!)

oh and i thought that the x1950 pro was shader 3.0.......but again i could be wrong
