was just wondering if i will really be needing the 512mb variants at 1280x1024? i was under the impression that the extra mem is required more for higher resolutions (although that impression is probably wrong!!!)

You're right. But supposedly it can make a difference with high AA and AF settings too.

I wouldn't get the HIS, problems with the fitting of the PCI-E power connectors on those, loads of ppl have had to file/sand them down as they will just not go in.

When you say loads you mean the minority who posted because they had a problem rather than the majority (of which I'm one) who had absolutely no issues with the HIS card and didn't feel the need to post about it till now?

Sorry, not meaning to be overly sarcastic but with large volume sales of any particular piece of kit blah blah you know the rest. Most people are to busy enjoying the new kit to come and start a thread saying it's great but if you get a borked bit of kit then you have all the time in the world to come and post about it.
I'd say I've ordered around 5 grands worth of kit from ocuk over the last 3yrs or so and only had issues with 1 doa antec psu in that time (first one I ever ordered and had 4 more since without issue).

The HIS is a gorgeous card, absolutely chuffed with mine as are the majority who chose them. :D

oh and i thought that the x1950 pro was shader 3.0.......but again i could be wrong
At 1280x 1024 you are probably fine with a 256MB card, though for a few £ more a 512MB card doesnt hurt.

Yes the X1950pro is shader model 3.0

cheers mate :)

will probably order one of the 512 variants at the start of next week then :D

How is it considerably slower? Mine is @ stock running memory core @ 1400MHz and GPU core @ 600MHz.

Sapphire - Slower clock speeds
Connect3D - Same clock speeds
HIS - Overclocked and slightly higher

I would advice that you stay away from the Powercolor x1950 Pro. It clocks considerably lower than other 1950Pro's :( Found this out the hard way :p
Care to clarify?

Are you basing this statement on the fact that your card didnt overclock well or some other info. As one card overclocking poorly doesnt necessarily mean they all wont.

Yea sorry about that rather unclear statement. Read several reports of the Powercolor x1950 Pro overclocking considerably worse than other Pro cards. at the mo I cant get mine higher than 609mhz on the core and 721mhz on the mem. Any further than this and I get mass anomalies, and my pc eventually crashes. Read similar reports of this happening to most people how have this card. Other variants of the x1950 Pro seem to overclock better though. Dont get me wrong, this card is fast, and plays all my games at the settings I want them at, its just that it doesnt overclock as well as I had hoped it would. Again, sorry about the rather frivolous statement before.
