I'm price conscious so was wondering if the XT is worth it over the pro. Will the pro do 1080p?

Thanks,
Philip

I'm facing the exact same decision - I think I'm leaning towards the xt rather than the pro.

Going to be buying in Jan, so hoping the prices will have dropped further by then ;)

/hint :D

I went for the XT in the end. I was going to spend 800-1000 on the rig, so the extra £50 seems worth it to me.

Thanks for the link too, seems the frame rates really benefit from the extra pipelines in the core. :D

Thanks,
Philip

Is there any difference apart from the cooler between the Connect3D version of the XT and the HIS Silent version of the same card? Is the HIS worth the extra cost?

We'll they're based on the same core, so I suspect there is little in it. At the time I bought (Friday) the HIS was cheaper. It also clearly states that it can do 1080p and is HDCP ready. Those are requirements for me, so it was the best choice at the time. :D

The cooler on the HIS card also gets great reviews. Quiet and efficient.

does the 1950XT have Crossfire2 or Crossfire? I know the "pro" has Crossfire2 and i'm looking at a nice PCI-E replacement for my AGP X800XT PE to go with my new Asrock Dual-VSTA board, but i want the internal Crossfire2 so when i get a new card (probably R600 in a year or so) i can use the 1950 as a physics card in 1+1 or 2+1 (by which stage physics should be well and truly "in").

Oh, and HIS vs Connect3D, the HIS has a much improved cooler (quieter, cooler) based on the Arctic Cooling Silencer series with some nice modifications (heatpipes, seperate ramsinks, uv reactive), and is a TURBO version, so is clocked higher than the standard (by 25mhz core). Seeing as a decent VGA cooler will set you back at least £20 (often closer to £30), and ramsinks will set you back maybe £10, even with the Connect3D on offer the HIS is still better value with higher clock speed too!

guys, what about the memory on these cards?

the difference between the GDDR3 256MB and GDDR4 512 is around 60-70 quid. Is it worth it?

For someone who does not do gaming at all, would there be any significant improvement in performance between the 256 and the 512 cards?

Sorry to hijack, but with faster and faster cards released now, requiring more power and producing more heat and thus requiring bigger heatsinks, have we seen the end of the single slot graphics card?

Or will there be a faster single slot than the 1950Pro/7950gt?

sorry to break it to you mate, but BOTH of the OP's pics are 2 slot choices...... and most performance cards have been 2 slot for a while.

then again with 3rd party heatsinks like the Thermalright HR-03 (can wrap around the gfx card) or the Zalman VF-900, you can still get single slot if it REALY means that much to you..... me? I like the fact that all that hot air (they are getting as hot if not hotter than the CPUs!) is going OUT the case rather than heating up the rest of my components!

Losing a PCI slot or PCI-E slot is annoying, but 90% of people won't bemoan it.

I've been having some problems with my rig, but have now booted it. Initial impressions are that the HIS XT is almost silent. Even with the side covers off, I can barely hear it. Top marks!

run an instance of rthdribl and see if it starts making some noise. ;)

I'm getting myself an X1950 XT either just before or the beginning of Jan :D

Are Sapphire cards good? It's the only ones this guy can get, but he can get me a Sapphire X1950 XT for £140. I know the Pro card had problems with overheating, but the cooling for that it pretty different to the XT's cooling.
