I like a little whisky every now and then and was wondering if anyone could recommend me a good glass and a means to keep my whisky cold? I know you can get "rocks" that are meant to be frozen and can keep your drink cold without diluting it. Does anyone have any first had experience of these?

My uncle also drinks a lot and would welcome any recommendations on small Christmas presents.

for a glass, you cannot beat a nice lead crystal glass, such as the Crystal of Distinction Hand Cut 24% Lead Crystal Whisky Glass. It costs, but is worth it..

As for the rocks, well, diluting Whisky is a cardinal sin, so, they can only be good, assuming that you like it that way, personally I find that chilling whisky dulls the experience somewhat.

I either have to have my drink hot or cold. Odd I know but.

I also know that my uncle has his whisky on ice. Would this make a good little gift if I got him a set of, DB-Tech Whisky Chilling Rocks Gift Set off of the Rainforest?

The glass may be something I'll luck into when I have a little more spare cash, for the moment something "cheap" yet still a good whisky glass would be nice as just using any old glass annoys me a little.

What's your budget Antony? Maybe a small bottle of malt?

We have already gotten him some other stuff. This was just an after thought while I was looking for a glass for myself.

I would maybe treat myself to something though. If there is something you could recommend. I've not got much money to spend due to my troubles with a recent GTX 670 purchase but if you could recommend something nice for someone new to this Whisky malarkey.

Bare in mind I'm only 19 so the whole alcohol thing is new to me.

Well, something like the glass I suggested, would get you a small amount of change from twenty quid, and comes in a presentation case (single glass mind), the thing with lead crystal, is that its a heavy glass, you can really feel the quality involved.

I used to drink it straight but now I always put a drop of water in mine. It's meant to help release the smells and flavour of the whisky. I was sceptical at first when I was told to do this but it does make a difference.

Probably couldn't be considered diluting right enough as it's so minuscule.

Yeah I've seen those "rocks" before think you can get ceramic and granite.
They are of course well cleaned/finished and polished :p
just pop them n the freezer for a bit and then plonk in yer.

Small christmas present?
Laphroaig Quarter Cask (70cl) is available for around £25 at the moment, fantastic stuff. I'm not the most knowledgeable on whisky I tend to stick to what I know, so wait for some of the others to pop their heads in.

First thing is, drinking whisky is a really personal experience. Secondly, I'd say that diluting the whiskey with a little water (up to 50/50 for some of the high strength high peat Islays) is regarded as far more acceptable than chilling it.

Another recomendation on a good heavy based lead crystal glass. For small gifts, maybe a nice water jug, either branded or again crystal depending on what he likes?

Get a Glencairn nosing glass.

As above. Or, get one of these:

I got one from the Whisky Exchange and really like it http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-2349.aspx

Nosing glasses are fine for when you are sampling or trying for the first time, but they are not for me when actually drinking for pleasure.

Like i said, such a personal thing!

Some great recommendations, I'll have to grab myself some whisky of some sort and will also attempt to get an idea of what my uncle may like. I know he has ice in his whisky so I'll grab some of those rocks to try out.

Thanks for all the information.
