White iPhone 4 delayed until spring 2011.

iPhone 5 refers to the "next" iPhone, due June/July 2011.

My point being that the "iphone 5" that i have heard rumours of is rumoured to be nothing more than an iphone4 with CDMA compatibility due to AT&T's exclusivity ending and apple wanting to be able to pitch to people such as Verizon?

I dont follow the phone market really, but this is what i understood to be the case? If so, then that really is quite boring as somebody who lives in a country with GSM networks :p

I bet they are trying to design it with the same form factor but solve the antenna issue too. Since the bumper is doldrums in huge quantities, and that also lead me to believe that iPhone 5 will look the same as iPhone 4 like 3G and 3GS...
Like your thinking - seems far the best outcome for Apple to redesign the antenna and reuse the same design to make life easier for iP4S (I cant see it being called 5 without a design change, though perhaps Apple will bump it to 5 just to remove the iP4 stigma)...

Amazed there are people out there STILL waiting for a different coloured version of a phone...

Whatever happens, it's a weird one.. release an updated iPhone 4 for CDMA and what happens in June? A short-cycle update to iPhone 5?

Release the iPhone 5, on CDMA and GSM, with new look antenna / antenna fix and pee off the people who bought the iPhone 4 less than 4 months ago?

Personally, I think they'll slip out a special CDMA iPhone 4 and just continue as planned with the launch of the iPhone 5 in June/July 2011.

Seems like a stupid delay if for the reasons above, colour matching doesn't take this many months to sort alone.

More feasible (or additional) reason is one I read earlier at Toms about the camera, the white painted glass on the back leaks through too much light from around the camera leading to washed out pictures.

My money is on:
  • CDMA iPhone 4 very soon. It'll still be called the iPhone 4, but magically the metal antenna band will be coated in something non-conductive (nail varnish anyone?).
  • Next iPhone in June/July. Name I'm not sure on. Only under-the-hood changes really, perhaps even simply more camera pixels and increased storage capacity. Magically the metal antenna band will be coated in something non-conductive (nail varnish anyone?). It's too close since the iPhone 4 antenna problems to do a whole redesign à la iPhone 4 as everyone will take it as Apple admitting the design fault of the iPhone 4's antenna. White iPhones to be available.
  • June/July 2012 for a whole redesign.

I actually don't think they'll change anything regarding the conductivity of the antenna for the CDMA iPhone4. To me it doesn't make sense, since the phone clearly works for the vast majority of users.

If they do make changes, people are going to be all over it in a "ha ha, so much for a non-issue/software glitch/don't hold it" kind of way and just drag up a debate that has pretty much gone away and basically admit there was something wrong in the first place.

If they don't make changes, it will be business as usual and there won't be any whiff of controversy. Nobody but a handful of people are going to notice or care and those still on the fence will wait for the iPhone5, which by that point will be a matter of months away.

They wont change the form factor for the reasons that

1 - history suggest they stick to it like the 3G/3GS
2 - they made loads of bumpers for the reason of protection, not for a "quick fix", if they change it, it suggests to the world that they know there was a problem and the bumpers are a blotch job to fix the problem...which i think it is.
3 - they are making enough sales from it at the moment to leave it. It sold better thwn ever before.

From a PR or accountanying point of view, they don't need to change much in design. They could bump the memory, or make it even faster, longer battery. Basically minor changes.

Well they've taken it off the site all together.

Actually, anyone seen the silver back mod? That looks sweet.

Better than the black glass.

From what ive read on the Redmond Pie website, the real reason the white phone has been delayed/axed is due to the fact that too much light was captured when taking pictures. This could only have been fixed by redesigning the phone.

Text taken from the website:

Real Reason: Light Leaks

Cult of Mac reports that the real, actual 100% fo-sho’ reason behind the delay was not the discolored buttons but actually because of “light leaks”. Explanation below:

When the white iPhone 4 takes a photograph, the semi-translucent glass cases leaks extra light into the camera which absolutely ruins photographs. Cult of Mac’s source said, “You don’t get accurate pictures on the white iPhone because of the color of the glass back. It washes out the pictures”. The source also said that Apple might have to do a complete redesign of the white iPhone 4 to deal with the light leaks.

The issue was discovered after a “last minute test” at a secret facility when the white iPhone 4 was used with a third-party case. Apple, of course, wouldn’t let an imperfect phone out.

A camera is just a lens to sensor.

To claim that there is a light leak, it suggests that the sensor element isn't a sealed unit. That the sensor is exposed to REST of the rear end surface of the phone. That is just bad design. Surely if the camera is just what you see on the back, where it is sealed, then it won't matter.

Secondly, the camera adjust exposure automatically. To have a light leak, it means there is light leaking AFTER the light has past the lens. That means the sensor isn't a self enclosed sealed unit. That's not a bad phone designed, that’s bad camera design

Yea thats what I read on MacRumors. Disappointing really but after antennagate I bet they just don't want to take the chance incase it blows up in their faces again, no one wants to ask Steve to do another press conference like the antenna one again!

Well that's been Apple's general practice for as long as I can remember and people still buy their products. I'm sure there were plenty of people who bought a 3G just before a 3GS was released.

Im going with the fault with the finish, simply putting it what happeneed to the white resin after it was bonded with the glass backing and front, its became a slight off white, whilst the Home button remains a perfect tipex white, its jsut to obvious till its sorted.

I wouldn't be too shocked if they're going to release iPhone 4.5 with CDMA, fixed antennae and a White one to generate some buzz at a lacklustre launch.
