Following on from Gilly's thread regarding the most overrated/fallen from grace players, I thought it might be interesting to get some views on which players don't get the credit they deserve. This could be either in the form of players you think are good who get slagged off all the time in the media (dont have to be great players, but just not as poor as is made out), or perhaps players who don't get a chance to play much and show what they can do. May as well stick to premiership players to keep things from getting too obscure, I'll set the ball rolling in no particular order...

Nikolas Dabizas
Vladimir Smicer
Steven Wright (liverpool never should have let him go)
Ray Parlour
Shaka Hislop (ok so he wont be premiership for 6months ;) )
Bruno Cheyrou
Gareth Barry
John Terry
Oleg Luhzny
Gustavo Poyet
Keith Gillespie
Michael Duberry
Mark Pembridge
Mark Draper
Michael Svensson
Winston Bogarde
Olle Gunnar Solskjaer

Of course those are mostly players from "big" clubs, I don't watch enough football to comment on some probably very good performers in weaker premiership teams like charlton.

Nikolas Dabizas - seems to make a lot of mistakes
Vladimir Smicer- lol from what ive seen he is poor
Steven Wright - cant remember much about him :/
Ray Parlour - agree, i cant believe he hasnt been in the england squad for a while.
Shaka Hislop - agree, he was good when he was with newcastle
Bruno Cheyrou- seen too little of him
Gareth Barry- not seen much of
John Terry- not seen much of
Oleg Luhzny- true, poor at defending "pacey" wingers though :/
Gustavo Poyet - never rated him highly
Keith Gillespie - used to be good for blackburn, seems to float his crosses rather than deliver at pace though which makes them easier to defend
Michael Duberry- he is ok
Mark Pembridge- no seen a lot of
Mark Draper- not seen much of
Michael Svensson - not seen much of
Winston Bogarde - not seen much of
Olle Gunnar Solskjaer - he is good and is rated REAL high so i wouldnt call him underrated

Nikolas Dabizas - not too bad
Vladimir Smicer - well I dont underate him , I think hes crap but hes not quite as good as I think
Steven Wright (liverpool never should have let him go) - correct
Ray Parlour - inconsistant and dodgy haircut
Shaka Hislop (ok so he wont be premiership for 6months ) - so so
Bruno Cheyrou - will come good
Gareth Barry - looked good early on then tailed off
John Terry - nice left hook
Oleg Luhzny - Rubbish
Gustavo Poyet - I always rated him
Keith Gillespie - run of the mill player , not as good as he looked like being
Michael Duberry - Good getaway driver - crap liar
Mark Pembridge - lost the plot
Mark Draper - not too bad
Michael Svensson - indifferent
Winston Bogarde - too full of himself
Olle Gunnar Solskjaer - looks good for a while then as soon as a gets a good run he goes off the boil

Nikolas Dabizas - nooo, he's got ability but makes at least one serious mistake every appearance
Vladimir Smicer - nothing special
Bruno Cheyrou - from what I've seen he shouldn't be making the 'pool team

Keith Gillespie - agreed, was good at Newcastle for a while but couldn't handle the Quayside nightlife or his gambling habit.
Michael Duberry - agreed, shame he got such poor treatment at Leeds for not covering up for Woodgate.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - I think he's rated about right tbh

heh yeh i was a bit sceptical about adding solskjaer at the end - but i really think he is super and not just a "good" striker who can be replaced by the likes of forlan, or veron in a 4-5-1 system. I would never leave him out the team. He is a better player than any of Cole, Yorke and Sheringham were IMO, just sat on the bench every week for 70mins, comes on and scores vital goals and then "thanks a lot olle, now get back to polishing the boots lad".

Smicer is one of the few liverpool players who will actually break from midfield to support the attack, and is not afraid to run at defenders. Maybe he will make the odd misplaced pass but for me at least he is trying to do something creative most of the time rather than the usual liverpool tactic of "give it short to stevie and let him hoof it up to owen"

I would add:

Gerrard
Anderton
Rebrov (by Hoddle :()
Seaman
(not sure why I am saying this but) Andy Cole

& would agree with a fair number of your choices :) Especially Poyet, he is fantastic, especially for his age & by proving JAzz knows nothing :p

Andy Cole gets a lot of undue stick imo, definitely under-rated along with team mate David Dunn and Matt Jansen.

I add:
Jamie Redknapp
Gary Speed
BOTH of Southamptons goalkeepers.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can't hack being in the starting line-up. He's well known for coming on and scoring and has found good form playing on the right but he's not a top class striker at all, just a fairly classy substitute.

yeah i forgot rebrov (like mr hoddle obviously has), i remember back in ~1997 when i saw kiev playing, one of the most devastating counterattacking teams I can think of. Kinda like the modern day arsenal, with a style of play capable of breaking so fast that playing away from home didnt matter much - as the 0:4 scoreline at the Nou Camp vs Barca showed.

I nearly put seaman down myself, but I guess for each person laughing at his recent gaffes there is another supporting him - most significantly, his england teammates and players from other teams.

add redknapp to that too :)
and paul jones i picked out as a future star playing in FA cup years and years ago for stockport county, unbelievable shot stopper over the past 6 years (a lot like kevin pressman was) but unfortunately he seems incapable of saving anything shot from more than 25 yards in 2002 :)

Indeed, I always liked Jones as a keeper & recently Juergen Macho has been outstanding, truely of another class...well Friedel's & Cudicini's class :)

I don't understand why Redknapp is under rated, he is quality.

blah he is rubbish :p Rebrov is good though does hoddle have problems with him coz it seems like he doesnt wanna give him a chance? Remember the days him and shevchenko were at kiev they were quite a pairing heh

Anderton is also crap, he seems to be injured all season and then is fit for the england matches and gets chosen ahead of more deserving players, i remember WC98 when parlour had the season of his life and anderton had played 7 games all season stupid hoddle picked him

seaman underrated, he is an arsenal man so i aint gonna argue :D

u talkin bout stevie gerrad? that man is rated well highly i dunno why u think that.

smicer is also played out of position, but the man lacks vision from what ive seen he always seems to play the wrong ball

redknap is also a quality player, he is not regarded highly by people though, his injuries have almost ruined his career though. I agree with silverpaws other players as well

The players say he is the best, englands manager does and so does wenger. Its just the fans have selective memory and always need an excuse for their failures, remember WC98 and the treatment beckham got.

The freak goals have been flukes, u think ronaldinho could hit the ball there again i doubt it, i reckon he meant it but was lucky to get it right.

I have watched kirkland and robinson play and u watch how much of their lines they are for freekicks so all this he shouldnt be off his line crap is thrown out the window coz the same people want one of those 2 to take over.

Looks like Marcus Stewart is underrated by Howard Wilkinson at Sunderland... I'm not sure how many times he's played, but he's got 3 goals in 2 starts IIRC.

I still can't believe we let him go for £1.5 million - rumour is we might be getting him back on loan...! :D :)

Ahhh the man with the Arsenal glasses has arrived ;) Have you ever actually bothered to watch Anderton play? (serious question btw) last season in particular he was fundamental to our midfield & played some blinders.

& yep talking about 'Stevie' keep reading everywhere that he is poor etc etc yet he really isn't :)

well i'll tell you something, he must be underrated by hoddle if he could only get on the bench for the game against saints at the weekend. saints are great at home (i've been to st mary's twice this season as its the nearest league club) but even so spurs were P O O R.

Slowly but surely you get toward proving the point, in the space of 4 hours he has gone from crap to ok, then considering how despite injuries he did make it into the England squad & when fit ranges from being a decent player to an influential one...hearing 'oh he's crap' suggests he is under rated ;)
