Who do you think is the most technically proficient guitarist?

Each to their own and all that, I like a huge range of guitarists tbh, from Paco de Lucia to J.Mascis, but Zappa as a whole package blows everyone away for me.

I saw Satriani and Gilbert last week - two very proficient guitarists!

Although having said that I saw Knopfler the same week, and I'd much rather watch him play guitar for 3 hours, he's not only a great guitarist but he plays with passion, and makes the guitar "sing" :)

dave you must live around manchester!! I looked on the nec web site and seen that they were playing last week, much to say I was gutted that I did'nt see either of them.

Satriani is truely astounding

Steve Vai
Buckethead
Joe Satriani
Paul Gilbert

They've got to be on anyone's list :D

(ME and Joe Satriani.. and yes, I blinked :p)

I've seen some cracking guitarists live this year - Tommy Emmanuel, Nick Harper, Andy Mckee, Erik Mongrain... One little known guy that never fails to impress me is Jon Gomm. He's one of the most versatile guitarists I've seen, performing as a solo-acoustic-guitarist-singer-songwriter. What the guy can do with an acoustic guitar is absolutely mind-blowing. It's even more mind blowing that I keep seeing him in small pub gigs or as a support act. The guy is a world class talent wating to be widely discovered.

I think these 3 youtube vids are a good place to start:

Temporary - gorgeous harmonics and delicious sounding tuning peg bends - including a double peg bend in harmony right at the end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNxCakR8jdk

Hey Child - Really rocks out on this one, a great song and what a solo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHJJQCaS7X4

Afterglow - one man 3 piece jazz on an acoustic guitar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38eOokTUWOE
