I'm astonished by the number of people who buy from rip-off registrars

GoDaddy & Namecheap for me :)

one of our domains was in expiry. we didn't renew because we didn't want the domain anymore. then we got an email from nominet (alegedly) demanding the princely sum of £80+vat to have it renewed.

I rang them because i suspected a scam. they in fact confirmed that to renew with them was 80+vat but if we went through our normal registrar it would be the normal £6.

shocking.

How much does it cost to renew my domain name?

If you renew your domain name via your registration agent you are likely to get a discount on the full rate renewal price (£80 + VAT for two years) as we offer our members a discounted renewal rate of £5 + VAT (for two years) per domain name renewal that they make via our automated system. If you wish to renew directly with us we charge £80 + VAT for two years' registration. These renewal fees do not include any hosting or associated domain name services.
Wow, it's true!

Nominet are the official .uk domain registry, by the way; not scamsters :)

It's not shocking. Nominet are a not-for-profit organisation. They have no wish to deal directly with consumers, they want you to buy through one of their members (ie. the companies mentioned in this thread). They offer you a renewal as a last resort if you can't renew through your normal registrar for any reason. The high price is to dissuade you from going directly to Nominet except as a last resort.

It's also worth noting that £6 domain renewal is *very* close to cost price for a domain registrar. Many even less at a loss.

the thing is many people don't know how much a domain name costs. So if they receive (because the registrar forgot to send renewal) a bill saying unless you pay 80+VAT this your domain name will be lost ... then what are they to do if they have significant internet business.

that's their problem I suppose ... but £80+vat is very steep.

oh well, it don't matter .. it was just an observation

The pro-forma invoice they send always instructs the registrant to attempt to renew the domain through their agent before going direct :).
