I'll start by saying this is NOT a medical thread. I am not looking for advice on cures but instead am keen to hear other experiences on migranes.

I get them maybe up to 10 times a year. Recently they have all came on around 6am and have wakened me up with the pain. Once my eyes open things go very blurry and have these blind spots with flashing objects in my eyes. It is very nasty. The headaches last anything up to 4 hours and then go away. It used to be i'd get them nearer night time and they would only ease after I vomited. Up to now i haven't had any joy in finding a solution.

Anyone else get bothered by these?

Yep - about 10-15 a year.

I usually get it when the pressure drops very quickly - i.e. going from sunny to stormy conditions. Having said that, I've noticed that they've also been more infrequent since I've gone from 2litres of full fat Coke a day to maybe 3 cans of Coke Zero a day - I think there were two triggers causing my migraines - Coke and the weather.

If I start to get one and can't stop it by taking a quick nap, then the only thing that gets rid of it is sleep and time.

I have a medical note from my doctor so the days I have off work are counted as one period of abscence rather than random days that would throw my Bradford factor through the roof.

Me and I hate them.

It ranges from not being able to think and do things without great effort right down to crippling me to the point where I spend days in bed.

The worst ones are the sickness ones. No real head pain but feeling real sick and vomiting is no fun at all. :(

I think they might be triggered from reading Red text on a Blue background?

:D

I get them, anyone who says they've had one and it's "just a bad headache" is a bit of a nob.

AWFUL things, get a handful a year and literally want to throw my guts up and crawl somewhere dark and on my own.

I can't remember if you said before but if you want to get into flying don't go near the doctors with this problem unless it's serious. A person I work with lost their medical certificate for 8 months after having a one off.

Migraine triggers are specific to most people but a disturbed sleep pattern, stress, caffiene, cheese, chocolate, fluctuating blood sugar levels, a poor diet and bright lights are usually the main cuplrits.

Get yourself into a regular sleeping pattern, exercise at least a few times a week, cut out things like coffee and coke and skip cheese and chocolate and see how your do. If you find you get more in the summer, try wearing sunglasses more often to rule out the bright light trigger.

I concur - identifying the triggers is the key.

BUT - diverging here into an advice thread - simple answer - see your doctor.

Not for me they aren't. My migraines are random.

They may seem random but 99.9% of migraines are caused by specific triggers - as the block from the Matrix said - there is always a cause and an effect. It could be though that they need multiple triggers for them to occur as in my case. It can take a long time to nail those triggers down.

Hi Scuzi, yep I was on to you before when I was thinking about ATC for a job but have changed my mind on that a while back now so no need to worry although I still plan on doing the PPL.

I don't drink much coffee now but will try cutting out the coke. I have had lots of food allergy tests etc but nothing obvious came out of them.

Hateful things to live with but thankfully I don't get them as often as other folks who get them every week.

Actually, for some people they can be just a bad headache. My mum suffers from chronic migranes but it's very rare for them to be bad enough that she can't function normally. I don't think the term migrane is a classification of severity, it's a different type of pain. A migrane to me is a shooting pain that you can almost pinpoint in your skull, rather than a dull ache across the whole head.

Trust me I've had all the medical tests done as well as trying cutting out all the probable causes.

During bad bouts (I go through periods of having migraines) I have to take Pziotifen an anti-depressant to suppress the migraines. Works a treat.

Yes for days before a big migraine attack I have a very specific headache like somebody has stuck a sharp blade in the left side of my head.

Another warning sign is smells. A variable amount of time before an attack my sense of smell goes into overdrive to the point where background smells are so strong they make me feel sick.

I've been getting these on and off for the past 1 1/2 years or so, i start with a blured right eye, then my vision starts to flicker a headach starts the flicker stops and blur starts to go, then i really really want to throw-up, as stated trying to find the trigger is the key, i think mine is cheese or some additive within cheese, its very odd cause i loved cheese as a kid and ate loads of it never had a problem.

I've also cut out most of my milk, only have a tiny bit on cereal in the morning, don't eat chocolate anymore and i've cut out coke / tea etc, it seems to be helping, i only discovered the cheese link this week actually i ate some cathedral city spreadable at tuesday lunch, about an hour later i felt odd and i got the feeling some of you may get that something is going to happen but i didn't know when, sure enough the next day just before lunch it all kicked off.

That just means they haven't found the trigger, not that there isn't one.

I had one one Friday and i vomited twice, pain was still there Saturday although it had calmed down a bit since Friday.

I just stayed in bed all day.

Hate them get them when the weather changes and if i am particularly stressed about something!

Don't know if this classes as going into a medical thread or not, so if it is I apologise, but I thought there was quite strong proof that the 'majority' of migraines were connected with teeth grinding in sleep, or that was certain a common factor.

I know for a fact that I do have a problem with teeth grinding in my sleep, but obviously 'cos I'm asleep and don't know if when I'm doing it and can't say that is a trigger for me.

It seems that nobody has the same experiences and it is all about different causes. Does anyone else get them first thing in the morning? My last few have been early morning but before that they could happen anytime during the day. Only the last 3 or 4 have had the blurry vision. One of those was when I was driving. I suddenly couldn't recognize numbers on the speedo and then things just went fuzzy and i got lightheaded. Very scary!
