Who has a dog that sheds and is it a pain in the ****?

My partner and I will finally be moving into our own house out of a rental in the next month hopefully and for as long as we can remember we have wanted to get a dog.

We're both dog people and grew up with dogs when younger but admittedly had breeds of dogs that were fairly "low" maintenance/didn't shed.

Turns out all of the breeds of dogs we like are breeds that shed but having never owned a dog that sheds before I'm struggling to understand just how bad it is for the owners.

We'd really like a golden retriever or choccy/black lab but have read they are prolific shedders. Are we going to regret getting one and forever be living in a hairy, sheddy house or is it just a case of needed to be on top of the vacuuming a bit more?

I have two dogs, one is a black lab.

We have to vacuum every day

She always sheds, but in spring and Autumn her 'coat' changes and it feels like we need to vacuum twice a day.

It's annoying but that's dogs for you. Hoovering up hair, picking up **** from the garden, cleaning them when they roll in fox crap etc.

Hope at least one of you works from home though? Please don't get a dog if you are both out all day.

It depends on the type of hair too I guess, I had a Rottweiler once. Beautiful dog, but she'd hair like crazy and because it was so thick and coarse it would clog the hoover every single time.

Yea a daily brush with a proper comb will remove a lot of loose hair. Depending on the hair color will mean some clothes get covered in hair, especially cotton. Always have a sticky roller to hand. If I wear a black cotton top it picks up all the light brown hair of my Pomeranian.

Yeh the positives of dog ownership do outweigh it for me but just wondering if it ends up being something that consumes your life.

But a daily hoover isn't the end of the world and regular brushing is fine.

I have a golden retriever and he sheds a fair bit but it’s not really a problem. Just need to remember to keep him away from the suits and nice clothes and realise my day to day clothes will have dog hair on them. There are some “dust bunnies” around the skirting boards but i hoover weekly, he gets a brush every other day or so and it seems to get the worse of it off. Do have to appreciate your house won’t be pristine though.

The joy that a dog gives you far out weighs the hair issue.

Though, your bed will be their bed!

Just get a robot vac and stick it on a daily schedule, you can get good ones for like 250 now.

I don't have pets but I ain't had a real hoover in about 6months.. no one would ever know

If you want a medium sized dog a standard poodle has very minimal shedding. If you want a bigger, more robust dog a poodle cross may exhibit similar low shedding. I breed standard poodles crossed with giant schnauzers. They don't shed in any noticeable volume.

The progeny vary in temperament though, some are very laid back like the poodle, some have the serious guarding instincts of the giant schnauzer. I can usually tell long before they go at 12 to 16 weeks which are which.

Some breeders claim X breed doesn't moult, that's rubbish, all dogs except the hairless breeds moult, just some a lot more than others.

Temperament wise a standard poodle is remarkably similar to a Labrador or a golden retriever, but usually a lot more intelligent. They are a working German breed, bred initially to retrieve off water. With a plain trimming they needn't look like a woman's fashion statement ;)

Good in theory, in practice they have a really small dust collection box so you spend a lot of time emptying it.

My dog is part husky and pretty much doesn't stop shedding. Hoovering daily and brushing pretty much keeps on top of it. He isn't allowed on the sofa unless his blanket is put out and we don't allow him upstairs either so that contains the hair to downstairs. Not a huge issue but having a lint roller is a must :D

A furminator is a must with some breeds we used 1 on our last 2 Springer spaniels and as said vacuum daily and make sure its a decent vacuum too

I agree with the robot vacuum.

Our boy sheds heavily twice a year. (is happening now!) and the robot vacuum is an essential!

It goes out every day and the bin is full of hair every time. But it just about keeps on top of it.

Without that it would drive me crazy

a lot of time? it's about 20 second's work... compared to the alternatives you're saving a lot of time.

you can get self-emptying ones that unload to their charging station, I think they start at around 450 but the charging station needs bags which put me off them...

I think they realised the brushes last for ages, the filters are washable and you pretty much never need to buy another ever.... so lets design a unit that needs bags as a money maker...

Forget lint rollers and the sticky paper variants.
Get one of those clothes brushes with the one-way velvet-like facing. Picks up a lot more fur off your clothes.

Make sure your vacuum is designed for pet hair, too. Shark kit is weird and feels flimsy, but does still do a good job.

Indeed. Our eufy has been amazing (manual empty. Takes 2 mins).
I think it probably is the optional product (for example dishwasher, tumble dryer) that saves the most time.

I never need to vacuum where it goes. Except irregularly in corners it physically cannot get to.

Parts are cheap and as said, with no bag, last ages.

My parents have a golden retriever and she is an absolute pain. The house is literally covered in hair. My mum and dad clean, mop, hoover, groom constantly but it's pretty much pointless. When you go and visit, you come out looking like a dog

Maybe some aren't as bad as her. That aside, she is awesome.....but I'd never have one myself. We have a dog ouselves, but doesn't malt anywhere near as much as the golden.

Border Collie here. Will be 10 years old next year. Key is to brush as much as possible it helps reduce the amount left on the floor. I can quite easily fill a big bag with fur. Have tried many different combs but the best one we have used are the ones with two claws at the end which looks kind of like an anchor in shape. Really gets the most out.

Still need to hoover but keeping the dog in check helps a lot as well.
