Who has damaged/broken a CPU from overclocking?

Hey all,

We have all heard stories about how overclocking can *DESTROY* your hardware, Melt or Degrade your CPU etc but it's never happened to me yet (touch wood)

I was wondering do any of you have any stories or personal experience of silicon destruction you wouldn't mind sharing? :D

I've had a few situations where the PC wouldn't boot or Windows would act all screwy (even at stock) making me think I had degraded/damaged my chip but that turned out to be a bOrked O/S :o

I know there are some extreme clockers on this forum so it stands to reason there must have been some hardware killing going on, cmon fess up! :p
 
Not from overclocking, but i killed an athlon 1800xp cpu by dropping it. it needed a wee bit of a clean but it fell out of my hand and went kaput, apart from that i had 2 leadtek 6800gt's die in the space of 5 days, great cards in sli in the short time i got to use them, though my nephew has killed an E6600 by pumping 1.7 vcore through it for 4ghz on air cooling.
 
I have destroyed 2 Athlon XP 2200+ chips in 6 months whilst trying to clock em when i was younger and a noob to doing it. But that was because of my standard cooler :o
1 had a black burn on the chip pcb it stood out like a sore thumb that's when i knew it was dead, the other just didn't want to even post but it was fun whilst it lasted.
 
From overclocking, no processors dead yet. I think I lost some ddr2 through overvolting.

I had an asus motherboard lose the plot and kill off the processor and part of the power supply, but that was at stock. Remarkably the ram didn't flinch this time around.
 
motherboards yes, a few tbh in my phase days but never a cpu despite the bonkers vcore I put through some of them.
 
Fail! Here I was hoping for videos of exploding chips or that wonderful youtube of someone over clocking a cpu then removing the cooler and watching it ping across his garage. Hmm does anyone have that vid handy?

From overclocking a CPU. ? No not to this date. I have oc'ed a few varieties too. All seemed fine on time of changed. However none of these were kept over a 3 year period. Im sure they are still working elsewhere in someone elses system.

I had a friend (honestly - it really wasn't me!!) who killed an Athlon XP 2200+, who decided that rather than check the CPU temperatures in BIOS, it would be quicker to just take the heatsink off temporarily and touch it with his finger... :(
 
Hey all, thanks for replies! :)

One of the reasons I am asking this question is that there seems to be a fear of over-volting around these forums and I'm not sure what basis people are making remarks like:

"I wouldn't put more than 1.40vCore through that chip, it won't last long!"

"Use that voltage if you like but make sure you have enough money for a replacement if it blows up!"

"That's an insane voltage, that chip is gonna degrade for sure!"

"Use that massive vCore if you want but your gonna massively cut down the lifesapn of that chip!"

What are all these remarks based on then? either a lot of people out there have had chips die/exploded or we are seeing a massive game of chinese whispers that's spread over the interweb and has mutated into a grossly exaggerated web myth! :D
. . . . maybe dating back to times past when older processors like the early AMD thunderbirds/Palominos used to Fry thanks to having no Safety features built in which is of course a thing of the past now.

There must be a reason some people are still scared to overclock? I'm not sure what it is though? :cool:

i thought amd chips still don't have safety features built-in?

some people wanna be safe because these cpu's & motherboards isn't cheap to keep buying

Yeah I agree that's what some people think but I wanna know why you would need to keep replacing a chip or mobo?

I never had to myself? maybe I am lucky or maybe its because the problem doesn't exist . . . hence this thread to canvass some opinions! :)

No harm in playing it safe. I've had lots of hardware die at stock speeds (albeit some was quite old) so I don't take any chances with heavy overclocking.

some people don't wanna take the chance because IF something did happen they would need to buy again. or maybe they don't wanna vold the warranty..

my 940 as been working at 3.7ghz 1.46v for 5-6months but about a week ago it be come unstable and i had to up the voltage to 1.5v.
