who has gears they dont use :P

I couldnt be without 4th - i use it all the time for petrol conserving at around 30mph.

On the subject of engine braking - I used to constantly use all the gears changing down, but now i'm trying to teach myself not to - on the basis that i know how to change brakes, but not cluches and engines :p

I never use first gear, it's so short and the engine's more than happy to go from 3rd, anyway.

Still, tend to use 2nd as it's a bit easier on the clutch, even though it is a heavy duty item :)

If its wet I usually just forget about using my first gear as the car just gets itself into a bone shaking wheelspin no matter how I try to control the throttlw.

Otherwise its, 1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th and 6th in quite quick succession. This car will give me RSI :D

ah i got 88here, can skip gears, but generally its easier...and less of a strain/noise if i dont

hate it when theres some slow git on the road to work...lose so much momentum rofl

Hi there

Accelerating in 5th from say 80mph upto 100mph takes about 5-6s and hence 5th is pretty slow really due to such tall gearing. Do the same in 3rd and its like 2s and in 4th around 3s. :D

lol 80mph+ in 2nd..they're some cars they are :D

Only time i use 1st in shogun or 4trak is when towing;the 4 trak rarely sees 2nd either :) .
Downside is that both really need to be in 3rd for 30 zones,in 4th they are barely ticking over

i drive a fiesta zetec and i tend to use 4th when sat at 30 - 35. but i have gone from 1st to 5th but i dont think my car liked it. i have also managed to start in 5th but it took a long time.

i tend not to skip gears but jus go through them quickly, so if im at 30 in 2nd go 3/4/5 within a second or two. don't no why :p

Engine braking 4tw...best to wait til your engines up to temp tho to reduce wear and tear.

I use all the gears on my Astra, but i've no idea whether ill do the same with the Mister 2 im picking up tonight.

Reverse.

On my old Sierra Saph, gearbox was on it's way out and reverse didn't work. This of course led to much merriment when backing into a space or any 3 pointers when on a narrow road...

Not me. Volvo is auto, Beemer is sequential. On my old bike (Guzzi V50) I had a habit of getting it up to 5th and leaving it there unless stopped - or unless I felt like really opening it up and enjoying the noise ;).
