I hope that link works how I expect it to. Basically, you've got one of those stupid pavement sticky outy bits for "traffic calming", right next to a side road. If you were going straight ahead, you'd have priority without any ambiguity. But what if you want to turn right down that side road? Do you have priority or does the oncoming traffic have it?

You would still have priority.

If you're turning right and don't want to clip the corner of the markings you would have to be quite close to the calming bit, not enough room it looks for an oncoming car to squeeze round.

In reality I'd imagine an oncoming car would start to sneak through if they saw you slowing down and indicating right

Yeah, if I'm sat there waiting to turn right, there's not enough room for oncoming traffic to get through.

And yeah, they do try to sneak through, which is why I don't slow down or start indicating until I'm right up close to the junction. :D

Yes I'm evil.

The thing is, I thought that priority sign might only give priority to traffic going straight on. Since I don't actually pass that traffic calming sticky outy bit, I thought it might not apply to me.

So... the guy coming up to the traffic calming rams the guy who's turning right head on then? Unless I read you wrong, of course the guy turning right has right of way

Priority is given to the traffic going through the traffic calming feature. Once a car has passed through, normal road rules apply.
A vehicle coming the other way has priority over a car waiting to turn right.
The non-priority direction clearly states to give way to oncoming vehicles - a car turning right into the junction isn't oncoming.

Common sense and courtesy would expect that any vehicle coming through from the non-priority direction would allow a car turning right to complete the turn before proceeding.

But the car turning right would then block the route of the car coming the other way, are you saying that if you were turning right there and there was a car coming the other way you'd stop before the T junction to let the oncoming car through cause I certainly wouldn't.

There is a give way marking on the road. That is the give-away answer. You should give way to traffic coming from the right, so you would wait until the main road is clear then move.

Are we getting confused with turning right into the road on the right and turning right out of the road on the right?

The OP asked about coming straight down the road and then wanting to turn right but if the question is extended to a car turning right out of that junction then even I would wait till the junction is clear before making the turn and I drive like a right royal arse :D

Oncoming traffic has priority, the car turning right becomes oncoming, however, it is really down to timing of the manouver, there is no clear answer.

Who the **** comes up with road layouts like that?

Someone that wants to ease turning into and out of the road to the right off of the main road. Perhaps it is a busy junction at peak times for example which might make it safer. Turning right onto the main road from the road on the right would be fun though. What would probably be better all round, is to have a roundabout there to be honest.

Oncoming traffic. The priority sign is for the chicane and the chicane only.

What is more concerning is people turning right out of the junction. Who has priority then? Someone 'oncoming' in the photograph's view or the 'right turner'?

It's only a residential side street, so a roundabout is probably not worth it. It's also not that busy a road. But further up the road, the speed limit goes up from 30 to 50, so a lot of traffic coming down the other way will still be coming in incredibly fast. I guess that's why they put the sticky outy bit there; to force people to slow down or stop if there's oncoming traffic.

By the way, I can't keep calling it a sticky outy bit. What's the proper name for it?

No. I'm saying that legally the oncoming car has right of way, as they've gone through the traffic calming measure, and the car waiting to turn right should wait until it's safe to do so. However the implementation of the traffic calming, means it would be almost impossible for an oncoming car to get past another car waiting to turn without invading the junction, which obviously they should not do. As I said before common sense and courtesy from drivers is required to overcome the lack of common sense exhibited by whomever it was who positioned the traffic calming measure.
