Who has right of way?

Just don't be an creep, simple. Pedestrians on crossings technically have right of way, just make sure you're not gonna cause undue trouble (i.e. forcing emergency braking, cars going too fast, just let it slide).

For ships and boats, it's usually the least manoeuvrable. well, it gets complicated, with wind attitude and whatnot :)

Pedestrians don't pay Road Tax so shouldn't have any Right of Way anyway.

I'm a pedestrian and I also have a car, so...?

I find the whole thing bizarre. In London you regularly see taxis hit the accelerator and hooting at crossing pedestrians as they turn into a side road that the pedestrians are crossing. I've also seen people in cars/vans abusing pedestrians for not saying thank you to the driver for stopping as they crossed a zebra crossing.

Personally I think a lot of drivers are a menace. It saddens me when I see elderly people trying to get across the road and being driven at, or people with kids almost being hit on a zebra crossing (seen this twice).

People in cars need to realise that they are driving a mobile death machine and drive safely. Just look at all the recent incidents of people being seriously injured or killed on pavements.

I'd stop to wait for the car to pass, regardless of whether I have right of way. I'm more concerned about causing a queue on the road or being hit by someone that is frustrated and distracted than I am stubborn about exercising my right of way :p

Generally this is me. I don't trust motorists.

Annoys me that I'll happily wait for some people to drive past first but if I'm trying to cross over a side road at the point it merges into a main road, I can be standing there for ages waiting for the traffic to clear up or have someone let me pass.

I always get funny looks when I continue to walk on situation like this. Its quite funny. I just wanted to make sure if I was in right as if anything did happen then it be the driver.

yup, at slow speeds you'll prob be OK if you want to be pedantic about it... though literally only on small local roads where say the car is turning in somewhere at 5mph or slower...

I always say thanks when using a zebra crossing and expect the same in return, is this bad?

Priority and Right of way do not mean the same thing. They are different concepts and its important to make a distinction between the two.

So what is the definition of right of way then?

Actually nvm you made it crystal clear in post 33. :)

My roadcraft book doesn't make the distinction between the two, indeed it only uses the term "right of way" for priority.

I'm not sure it's really a useful distinction to make.

In the UK the car driver will try to run over you because we are miserable gits. In the USA car drivers are much more polite and stop.

Top tip, make sure the driver of any car has looked you in the eye before you start to walk in front of their stationary or slow moving vehicle.

If a pedestrian has started to cross a road, then they have priority - regardless of crossings. That is the highway code's position on the matter.

I always wonder how this works with traffic lights and pedestrian crossings. I.e. Green man and red light, simple. Red man and green light - pedestrian still has priority?

Obviously in backwards countries where they have J Walking crimes it's obvious, but in the UK?

How do they know this :confused::confused: - this is a cruel generalisation. Think of all the lactose intolerant children  I can't believe they are forcing our children to be interested in ice cream

Lactose free ice cream - problem solved ;)

What a coincidence, I was explaining this to my 25 year old about 4 hours ago when she went mad at a pedestrian crossing a road she was turning into.
I said that the white lines gave pedestrians right of way priority.

That really *****s me off. Especially when the car doesn't indicate before turning, or is blatantly speeding and turning into a blind side road without checking properly or slowing down.

No the car still has priority as in you don't need to stop to give way to waiting pedestrians. If its a green man you're not technically stopping because pedestrians are there, you're merely stopping for a red light.

Think of how a zebra crossing works. The pedestrian has priority there which is why cars will stop if you're standing on the edge of one.

Doesn't work here in Stoke and definitely doesn't for cyclists.
I have several t-shirt's and the last one who looked me in the eye put me in hospital.

Obviously I'm assuming the pedestrian is crossing.

I.e. The pedestrian starts to cross when there isn't a car there, car turns a corner and pedestrian is halfway across the road but the light is green for the car and red for the pedestrian.

Anyway, what makes you think I'm the car driver in that situation. :p
