Last job ad I saw wanted MCSE as a minimum with CCNA but was only prepared to pay £18k (and that was with experience).

some places are way out of touch with reality, if you have an official ccna you shouldn't get getting less than £32k could even go up to £35-40k +

this guy sitting behind me has his ccnp, he easily on more than £45k possibly close to £60k, it is a global investment bank... but still. i saw him looking at porsches on the autotrader.

i laugh when these places want IT people for less than £25k, you get what you pay for realy. Also some people have MCSE and don't even know what XVID or other basic IT things are.

Also a lot of people working in IT do not like computers, i have heard some people say they hate computers. why they work in IT i don't know.

Me, i like computers and i enjoy working I.T and i want to learn more and get more money :D

To be classed as an engineer in Germany or other countries you have to be a degree qualified and normally chartered engineer, in this country however any "gas engineer" "electrical engineer" "service engineer" can call them selves that without ever going near a university.

In this country you get a lot of people complaining about this, I for one used to get annoyed with it, now I just let people get on with it as it doesn't affect anyone in your field (as an engineer) just when you meet people.

Normal scenario is

Girl - "So what do you do?"

Guy - "I'm a mechanical engineer for X Company"

Girls - "Oh so you fix cars?"

Guy - "FALCON PUNCH!"

Nice example, I see what you're getting at now. :D

I've always thought of an electrician and electrical engineer as 2 completely different roles...

Still, if I was in a job I enjoyed, I wouldn't really be too concerned about the title unless it was something embarrassing like a fluffer! :D

No the reason people get annoyed is generally is electricians calling themselves electrical engineers, same with gas fitters/techs calling are now gas engineers where as if you explain to people what an engineer actually does you get a dumfounded look.

I have had examples where I tell people I am a structural engineer and get "so like an architect" this is after I've explained I work in the oil and gas industry so nothing to do with buildings (unless its a module for a rig) people don't understand what we do and as such other people using the term engineer for technician jobs is like a kick in the nuts for the hard work we do.

But as I said before, this normally only annoys people in the industry at the start, then after that you don't care if a leccy wants to call himself the electrical engineer with queens honors or anything really as it doesnt affect your pay/job.

The brain isn't firing on all cylinders today, (30hours with no sleep :o )...

I can see why it would be annoying to have people who aren't really engineers having the same job title.

I this it also adds another level of confusion for those of us who aren't really sure what exactly a job involves. I know roughly the type of thing a EE does, designing and testing circuits and PCB's... But if someone was to ask me what exactly a mechanical engineer does I wouldn't really know the specifics. :)
