Who owns an iPod alternative?

Just wondering how many people use an MP3 player that isn't an iPod?

I use my Nokia N97 Mini.

If you do. Why?

Sheer convenience. My Nokia is a phone, satnav and mp3 player all in one. iPod can go root its boot.

Have you ever used an iPod and prefer your own?

I have an iPod Nano, which is excellent. But it's still one more gadget I have to carry, so these days it stays at home.

i bought an 8gb philips mp3 player for 40 quid to take on holiday, purely for the low price
I use it in the car/truck at work now with an fm transmitter and wish I had spent more on one with a decent screen now, pretty hard to make out the small writing
the sound is fine tho

Pft, I have a wandering mistrel that follow me around. They look something like this

N.B. iPod is in my spellchecker... that's what you call global domination of the market.

I personally own an iPod touch. Love it! Use it mostly for emails around the house and browsing the internet. Occasionally music on the trains etc.

Just want clarity here an Ipod "touch" isn't only an MP3 player.... if we compare like with like then it should be a "nano".

If I just wanted a music player than I certainly wouldn't want buy a nano as Itunes is an awful (IMHO) piece of software.

However I have yet to see something that compares to the touch.

That said, I wouldn't ever use an Apple product, as simply put, I'm not their target audience. I don't give a damn about looks or fashion. I don't want the "easy" experience that itunes provides;

Sweeping generalisation is sweeping....

You don't have to be in their target audience to buy their products you know. :D

As I've said I think iTunes is devil spawn and don't find it easy at all... :(

had a sony bean for a while, not a bad little thing, now have a 1st gen ipod touch and will do untill it dies....ill then get another ipod touch lol

I would much prefer total control of my audio library,

Snigger.
I'm dead old and even I know you can turn everything off iTunes and just use it for dragging and dropping onto your iPod.
You don't have to have anything in a the library.

Anyway I have a Samsung Galaxy with Poweramp and Voodoo Control.
I also have an Archos which gets pumped through a 3000 watt PA rig.

Never used anything Apple, it's not a stand against them and their products but the alternatives always seem to be cheaper. Biggest reason I don't use iPods is the fact that I have to go through iTunes, I just want to be able to drag and drop my music.

Snigger again.

Alternative way (how I do it):
1) Open up Windows Explorer with MP3's in it
2) Open up Windows Explorer with the MP3 player in it
3) Drag & drop files onto MP3 player

iTunes way:
1) Open up Windows Explorer with MP3's in it
2) Open up iTunes
3) Drag & drop files onto iPod

Why do people come out with this crap that you can't drag & drop to an iPod?

Alternative way: works on any PC made after 1996, pretty much.
iTunes way: requires the machine to have iTunes installed

I'm still using my Samsung YP usb stick thingy. Small, batt lasts ages and i've never felt compelled to replace it. About 5 years old now i think.

My Samsung Wave S8500 serves me fantastically as a media player. Why have 2 devices when I can have a phone and media all in one?

Nobody thinks that, they just mean you can't dump files as FLAC then remove them from the iPod as FLAC for example. Also you don't need to load windows explorer twice, unless you're a noob.

Exactly, having to install another piece of software just to get music on and off your MP3 player is fail.

Samsung P3. (replaced a stolen Cowon S9)

Blows the ipod range out of the water for SQ if not quite up to the S9, video compatability is nice, battery life pretty good, love the design (find me an ipod touch that hasn't been in a case all it's life, that is over 1 month old that looks anything like as good condition as my p3), cheaper than the equivalent ipod nano when I bought it.

I don't have an ipod touch as an internet device without 3G is useless to me.

All that said I might be going over to a Windows Phone 7 soon so if the SQ is good and the Zune system is a good as it's made out to be I might use that instead.

I had a first gen ipod nano as my first mp3 player, got an iriver clix2 redline which was great after that, then the Cowon, followed by an Archos 5IT which was pants. My favourite so far has been the Samsung. Sure it's not an all singing all dancing 'I do everything' device but it does music and video pretty damned well and that's all I want it for. My phone can handle the rest.
