Sold my 980 SLI setup & will pass them over to my friends once my 1080s have arrived question is:

Which Manfacturer to go with?

Im tempted by Founders edition (due to SLI) but i want quietness

i have a 2 slot gap between them & bottom card will have achers of room once i get my new case tomorrow!

So which manfactuer would you favour for
Quiet/Cool/RMA?

You should stick with ref coolers and they are all pretty much a muchness but EVGA for warranty followed by MSI and Gigabyte. My 680 ref cooler was quieter than my TX cooler, so I expect this 1080 being a smaller chip, it too will be quieter like the 680 was.

Founders card is what I will get out of my impatience and don't care that I will be paying an extra ton on top :p

I'm a big fan of the MSI Twin Frozr cards due to the big low rpm fans, especially on a low power card like the 980 and 1080. I must admit, though very quiet, the Twin Frozr did get a bit too toasty for my liking with the higher power consumption 980Ti, so I fitted a Hybrid on it.

You could get that tasty looking Galax one with the awesome looking, sleek black reference blower. Whoah mama that is a fine looking card..

That will likely be the card that will be at the $599 MSRP :p

I'm wary of brand new cooler designs as there can be teething problems. There were several cases of fans making strange noises on new 980Ti designs.

it makes sense though Galax & Another G always design a but ulgy card that just meeets the temp requirements to make it cheap from memory when 900 released it was -£30 MSRP

but new case, going for pure silence. want to get my PC under 20db it currently is around ;)
XL R2 :)

My tuppence:

If EVGA do a hybrid, then I'd jump on it. That'll be tops for cooling (especially for SLI) and quiet unless another brand has taken serious note of the quality of EVGA's hybrid 980Ti and set out to surpass it this time around.

For air quiet - MSI (just have to be willing to replace the paste if temps are toasty but this can happen with other brands too, just a little more frequent with MSI it seems). The pros outweigh that "con", imo. To be fair, the paste application on the last MSI 970 I played with was near-perfect. Only shaved 1C off with the new paste, which may even have been down to room temp change.

So, other than RMA factors, does it matter if I'm WC'ing them anyway?

I guess there is a stock overclock question, but again does this really matter if I'm OC'ing them anyway?

Cheers
Ben

You really think we would forget the Hybrid card with the success of the GTX980Ti Hybrid!!

Thanks for confirming. :)

I have a question, Ben. Are companies such as EVGA allowed to make dual-GPU cards if they wish? Or does this require Nvidia's consent?

Just wondered as AMD have their Pro Duo which is pretty ideal for maximising GPU power in mini-ITX rigs (well, apart from the fact the 1080 may or may not beat it). Would be nice to have a similar option from Nvidia's partners.
