Who uses V-sync

How many of you guys use V-sync? I gave a 6800GS 512MB with a 32 LCD. When playing games it tears so I enabled V-sync, but this drops the FPS about 10-20 so COD 2 goes from 40 - about 20.

Is their anything else I can do to stop the tearing without using V-sync?

I use V-sync all the time as there is no point having higher FPS then the refresh rate and tearing drives me nuts.

Forcing double or triple buffering should get rid of any FPS drop while having V-sync on. Some people say triple buffering cause’s mouse lag but I have never noticed my self. Then again I don’t play First Person shooters much.

Tearing drives me nuts as well so I always have vsync enabled.

Another alternative would be to disable vsync and use the console command in whatever game you're playing to lock the frames per sec at your monitor's optimum rate (therefore it'll never go above say 60fps or 75fps, therefore no tearing).

32" lcd  I would have thought you would need a better graphics card than a 6800gs, especially when playing graphic intensive games like CoD 2 - I was using a much better card than the one your using 2 years ago.

I think he is talking of a TV, probablly the Samsung.

The res of a LCD TV is quite low (1366x768).

“How does that work? Enabling things in my mind always seems to lead to slow down.“
Sorry I am at work and don’t have time to explain it in detail. When the FPS drop below the refresh rate with V-sync on then you get a 50% drop in FPS. So if your refresh is 60 and you get 59 or less FPS then your FPS get cut to 30fps. If you then get 29 or less your FPS is cut another 50% down to 15fps.

Double or triple buffering creates buffer so the 50% FPS does not happen. But you use up more 3Dcard ram.

I have 512MB so this should be ample? Thank you for your help

I see your FPS are going from 40 to 20 which match's the 50% drop. So double or triple buffering should fix your low FPS problem and 512meg is more then enough. Let us know if it doesnt fix your problem.

Thank you for your help mate, will have a play tonight, because I too am at work!

Can you enable double/triple buffering on a 6800GS though the control panel? I think I saw this grey out, maybe not! Is it something inherent to all gfx cards being able to do?

I always use v-sync on, much smoother and the tearing does my head in.

I only think triple buffering comes into play in OpenGL games, correct me if i'm wrong.

Enable V-Sync if the fps of the game is higher than the refreshrate otherwise you get the halving of the fps like pottsey said or enable triple buffering but this itself creates a drop in performance.

So if you want to enable V-Sync tweak the settings enough that your fps stays at >60fps so that might mean running COD2 in DX7 mode

Do note that whenever I use V-Sync in CS I notice CONSIDERABLE mouse lag, as does everyone I've ever played with (Many clans and players over the years).

I used v-sync for about 6 months before someone told me to turn it off, and my kill/death ratio has never been the same since :D

Prefer to live with the tearing! I cant believe it tears because the FPS are going over 60, where as half this should be 30 considering its running at 19-25max even as low as 14 FPS with V-sync on. It does not make sence!!

Do I need to enable TB with Vsync with this tool, or just the TB?

For Toca 3 it has an option to lock the frame rate, is this the same as v-sync, so it does not go over 60FPS?

Cheers

PS whoever invented FRAPS is a genius too!
