Anyone heard anything about this? Saw a story on Madshrimps and wanted to see if anyone here could shed any light on it. About to upgrade, but might have to jump sooner rather than later.

Being out of the loop for a while I was also wondering is there any real need to go for PC8500 memory? or would the 6400 stuff do?

depends if your CPU overclock is being held back by 6400 RAM, and if you think you'll benefit from the extra memory bandwidth. If you have a 9x multi, probably not, if you have a 6x multi you might want that FSB higher than 400.

Given how cheap some 8500 is at the moment, it might be a good idea to get the guaranteed headroom, for the same price as some clockable 6400 chips (such as cellshock, ballistx, etc)

the 8500 ram is ok if you sit there doing benchmarks all day, but tbh even intense gaming probably wouldnt notice *too* much difference. if at all (providing your cpu and gfx is good)

I reckon DDR2 has reached it's performance limits. If you buy a new mobo today with a 1333 FSB, your stuck between a rock and a hard place because even the top perforning DDR2 modules will not justice to a 1333 FSB. DDR3 is with us now and it is performing much better than anyone expected, they can hit 1333 FSB and higher, they run on lower voltages, the latencies are getting tighter, but the prices are currently double or sometimes treble the cost of DDR2. This will change ... I see the prices dropping on DDR3 by the years end or early next year and when that happens you won't be able to give away DDR2 memory.

AWWWW

I was saving up money for a new build by august, and as the prices pf RAM were droping, i could have gotten a better GPU, and CPU...

i hope it doesnt raise to much, or ill have to wit even longer, or reduce my specs :(
